I agree gift cards can be excellent gifts...it doesn't mean you are are a lazy ass...
Most people I know WANT them, especially family.
They don't want me buying their books for them, if books is their thing..etc.

Especially older people who have too much "stuff" as it is.
Most I know want the cards...and a little personal something, as well.
