But isn't a huge part of the allure the social context of the film?
I mean I watched Midnight Cowboy, and I thought it was a great movie, but I didn't see why it was originally rated X compared to the movies of today.
I can appreciate Airplane more than the spoofs of today, and I know that there were a ton of disaster movies in the 70's so in 1980 when Airplane was made you could catch the references. But one thing that makes the spoof movies entertaining for this generation is that we catch the references (because for the most part the movies they are spoofing are less than a year old), now don't think I actually saw anything past Scary Movie 2, but from the previews I can tell you what they're referencing.
The rating for Midnight Cowboy really doesn't make sense by today's standards. But it was a pretty big deal when it won Best Picture despite that.
And spoofs... Does anyone else really appreciate the wit of spoofs from the 80s and 90s more now? Scary Movie started the downward trend of what parodies could
do. What are we getting now? Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans and Superhero Movie? Ugh.
