There is a little story by Neil Jordan called "Night in Tunisia"that is as beautifully crafted as anything ever written. It's the title story of a collection of his that I have. Also anything by Truman Capote, Katherine Mansfield (esp. "The Dolls' House") Flannery O'Conner, Alice Munro ("Something I've Been Meaning to tell You" is amazing) or Chekov (Lady with Lap Dog is one of my favourites of his) And "The Dead" by James Joyce. I'm a huge fan of the short story and I think it's a shame that it is a bit of a dying art.
