I agree that twists are needed to keep every season from being a Pagonging, but still, do we really need 4-5 twists per season? They could easily just have one twist every season like they used to back in Marquesas and Africa. Just throw a "random disc tribe swap" into episode 3 or 4, and that should be more than enough. Everything beyond that is just overkill. Once Survivor became more about the twists and less about the people, I think it started to lose itself. There is no need to ever have a double boot episode.
The first season with multiple twists was Survivor Pearl Islands which many (including myself) hold as the best season of the show. The success of Survivor Pearl Islands is probably to blame for the emphasis on twists. Most of the twists, I find to be gimmicky and I don't care for them (double boots, 2 contestants not picked for tribes, ethnic based tribes, small tribes based on age/gender, message in a bottle, Exile Island, comfort vs. hardship etc.). Aside from the twists they had in Pearl Islands, the only other twist that I liked was tne multiple Hidden Immunity Idols as they were implemented in Fiji (after votes are cast but before the votes are read). China was a decent season because there wasn't an overabundance of twists.
