She got a light sentence due to being female, and due to the fact getting a conviction would have been exceptionally hard due to circumstantial evidence on the murder charges. So they plead her out on lesser charges to secure his conviction in exchange for testimony.
To give your underage sister animal tranquilizers and lez out on her, then give her to your boyfriend as a gift until she chokes to death on her vomit is as bad or possibly worse considering the family connection. It was Canadian Justice at it's worst. If someone had of killed her in prison I'd have put a $100 in their prison account.
Edit to add: No one disputes Paul wanted Karla to kill them, and he would have done it himself. Maybe he coerced her to do it, but it doesn't matter... it is still murder.
