I am sure they spent more time focusing on James because it was late in the game and he had been on the island for so long at that point... there was a lot of personal investment when it came to him and the cast/fans. Had this happened on Day 3 with a fan... then we probably wouldn't have seen as much of the injury. With Amanda finding the idol and Jame's injury... the family visit really didn't have to do with the game itself (I would assume there wasn't much strategy going on or they would have shown it) and with the time allowed... you pick and choose what is important for the audience to see.
