As for his boot, I really don't see how he COULDN'T see it coming. He obviously gets blindsided down the line (I doubt he'd backstab Erik or James), and yet he doesn't have the sense to use the HII? All I can think of is that Parvati, Cirie and Amanda simply persuade him that they're booting Natalie or Alexis and he believes it. Stupid blunder indeed.
Let's put to rest that the HII is not used because in the TV Guide article, Probst says that the HII gets played. Here is the exact quote:
But it's the real idol that may cause the biggest drama of the season, "The hidden idol has never played a bigger role than it does this
time.", Probst says. "Your jaw is gonna drop at least twice, and maybe more, when you see how it is played."
