That's kind of odd to me that they don't do cauterizing at the office. It's just a chemically treated swab thing, unless they've changed methods. I hope he doesn't have to have it done, I've heard it's pretty painful. As for the sickos, maybe they're peeps who are dehydrated or are having secondary infections brought on by the flu. Or maybe they're big babies. Anyway, best wishes to the boy.
