I've got to suspect there was more to Yau's strategy than we saw. He got the editing shaft for a reason, and I doubt it was because he sat around and let himself get booted. We weren't supposed to fall in love with him again, or else his boot would be too crushing, and we're probably supposed to end up siding with the Couples Alliance + Cirie. We didn't get to see him play because he was hidden so as to prevent an uproar over his departure.
