If one can be faithful to a partner outside of marriage (or unfaithful to a spouse, which is fairly common), then how is monogamy a legitimate reason for marriage? You can argue that straight couples marry to have children, which helps the American economy, but you must remember that children born outside of marriage is possible and fairly common as well. If children are a basis of marriage, then all married couples without children or immediate plans to have them ought to have their marriage licenses revoked, if reproduction is a legitimate factor for marriage. Personally, I don't agree with gay marriage because of it being a religious institution, but I also don't think that people can argue that gay couples have no right to be married for any reason except moral or religious ones.
