He was ineffective, snookered, confused, and "galloping off in all directions." To think he was successfully scrambling is to see a different episode than I saw. I just don't see CP for this one trick pony that utterly failed. That's not true. His initial scrambling worked and they were set on voting out Laura. When Laura won immunity, John went to Erik about voting out Monica since they had planned on voting Laura. Word got around to Monica and Laura, which led to them turning the tables on Erik and voting him out. None of this would have happened without Russell's initial successful scramble to get rid of Laura.

Young...not so much. In life or playing Edgic. :-) And Riliss, you always have a good grasp of Edgic. What do you think? Same old song from me, don't understand the joy of drive by posters and the condescending tone. But fine with me. I keep playing. I won't bother anyone anywhere else. I want to be here and do my best. All I can do. As a fan, I have to say that while I fully expect all the Foas to be in the endgame and stick together, I have trouble figuring out the exact path. I didn't post much last season, but as a fan watching, it stunned me how it went from Brendan to Tyson to Sierra to Debbie, completely non-linear. I was surprised every week, the only expectation I got right is that Timbiria would implode and Erinn and the 3 Jalapos would come out on top. This episode, it strikes me that the focus was on two basic things - Foa sticking together as they befriend Galu in separate ways, and how Galu's two factions attack each other, along with how Shambo fits it. I expected Shambo to make a jump to Foa, and she didn't. (Edgically, the issue is that we got no insight from her about her reasoning. So disappointing.) When viewing the edit, it seems the continuing issue of splitting Monica/Laura awaits, with only one line from Dave explaining the men's turn on Erik, and of course, the preview of going after Russell. (Early odds he wins immunity next week.) But I find the interesting moment was John, who disagreed with the Pagonging of Foa Foa, and while it spells Galu's doom, it came off not necessarily as a bad idea, just that the other Galus couldn't accept it, from Erik to Shambo, etc. Unlike Aitu, who by merge's end had effective control, am I to think Foa still has episodes to take a power position? Hmmm. That's what the edit wants me to focus on, and to want Galu to be dethroned. But it doesn't seem as easy as a Jonathan flip and Nate going home. Too early. There are too many things going on to mess with my mind. I remember checking the merge episode chart and seeing Ethan's miniscule merge episode rating. That isn't the norm. Obviously. But compared to anyone else, it fits to pick him. Michael

He has a death wish, he's being picked by process of elimination, we don't know why he voted Ashley instead of Marisa, he can't make fire and now he's totally irrelevant at the merge. Russell had a great episode, not because of his insane visibility but because he's now getting doubt. Talking about how he's no longer in control, to the point where he thinks he has to play the idol to stay in the game, makes people really think he's going to lose. For such a self-assured guy, they could have easily painted him as being arrogant as usual, but they didn't, and that's huge. Natalie had a pretty good episode too, but I'm worried by her lack of confessionals that were specifically about the merge. (though I'm tired, and I watched the first half of the episode several hours ago, so maybe she did and I've just forgotten) If her edit stays like this, she'll be a big contender in a Bob-esque way. (And while that may not be "Edgic" in the sense of using the guidelines, it is "Edgic" in the sense of using editing patterns from previous seasons to determine the winner.) As far as Jaison - his tone has fluctuated too much for me to consider him. First he was P when he was the victim of racism, then he was N when he thought this was his worst decision ever, now he seems P again. This whole time he's kind of had several different dimensions, but he's gotten them one at a time. First he's the guy defying stereotypes, then the almost-quitter, now the underdog or something. According to the Pg 1 guidelines, no one should win this season. Obviously that's not going to happen, so you have to look at what's been happening with unusual winners like Bob and Danni. If Natalie would fit in with those, I say it's her. If not, I say Russell.

Sure, the editing's lopsidedness is severely disappointing, but they do seem to work well when they have gold on their hands. Episodes 3, 6, and 8 (and maybe even 1 and 2) were really fantastic, possibly worthy of "best episodes ever" lists. I think this episode shed some interesting light on our "Edgic Choice," continuing the flaws of some and giving others new flaws. Russell's flaw continues to be his unbelievably high visibility, but in my eyes high visibility is more excusable than low visibility; to be featured is better than to be ignored. I think an important facet that Russell received this week was doubt: for once, his plans aren't working; his idol is gone; he's losing control. That's great stuff for a potential winner! Granted, it's probably too much, but I think this was edgically a good episode for him. Mick's UTR1 is certainly a tragic episode, and true to my word, his Ep8 edit drops him to my #2 slot this week. But as OTH mentioned, what about Ethan? The UTR1 merge edit of a winner is not unprecedented. I've never seen Season Three, so I can't comment, but does anyone remember anything about how that went down? I am a believer that once I eliminate someone, I don't "un-eliminate" them, so it's looking like Mick and Russell for long haul for me (unless one of them is eliminated soon, which is looking entirely possible. More odds for FF to overcome!). For me, Jaison's premerge should eliminate him (despite his strong CPP4 edit this episode, which reminded me much of Marisa's ep1 edit, with much of the bulk coming at TC).

Dave - UTR1 - Irrelevant to Erik - OTTN5 - he maybe also CPN....but I guess OTT is better for him Jaison - CPP4 - great episode for him....a contender John - CP3 - Strategist.....but not a contender....so much flaws in his edit... Kelly - UTR1 - Completely Irrelevant... Mick - UTR1 - TRAGIC. DREADED. MERGE. Monica - MOR2 - just there......doesn't have any INV1. Natalie - CP3 - I don't think she's only a 2 =o .... great contender...but dreaded first 3 episodes... Contenders: Natalie Jaison Brett - because he stands out in the darkness....the only one who never escaped 1 vis. so maybe a type 5 winner =o of "WHO?"

Turns out she isn't. Interesting that the 'previously' made sure to highlight that Russell had only positive things to say about Natalie. Reference to dumb blondes are a thing of the past, it seems. It's clear to me, now more than ever, that this season is all about Russell. Russell and his hubristic cockiness. He starts off having no respect for his dumb blonde allies, but little does he know that, as early as the first episode, the editors have ensured, through Betsy's magical powers of transference of women's intuition, that we know that Natalie will become the standard bearer for avenging dumb blondes everywhere. Recall that, for all Russell's zillion trillion plans and strategies, Natalie was the first person this season to clearly articulate how the season would unfold strategically. Countering Jaison's miserable whining a few episodes ago, she tells him not to give up - ultimate success will come because Galuans will flip. This episode the Strategic Master is shown to flounder for the first time: 'I don't think you changed their minds', he mutters condescendingly. 'I think you think you did it', he adds, subtitles ensuring we note the loosening of his infallibility. Natalie's edited expression restrospectively takes on special meaning when we find out that she had indeed done it. What's more, the Evil Master had sacrificed his idol unnecessarily. Russell is edited as destined for the downfall that hubris traditionally imposes on its acolytes. This is the season of how Russell loses to those for whom he has the least respect. I've never seen Season Three, so I can't comment, but does anyone remember anything about how that went down? For me, personally, I don't think the merge is any more important than any other episode. It's important if the winner has some kind of role to play in it but if Mick didn't do anything that was significant, there'd be no reason to show him more. Sometimes the winner is boring. If Mick wins, it doesn't make his confessionals more interesting. Especially when, once again, the story was being told through Russell's eyes. Russell does a better job of narrating his strategy in a more interesting manner. I really don't think there's anything interesting about Mick. The fact that we know nothing about him other than he's a doctor might not be the fault of the editors if there's nothing interesting to work with. The other thing is, though winners have tended to be more CP lately, that's not always going to be the winner's edit, so a CP edit in the merge might work well for a CP winner, but with Mick being a bland MORish character, there's no reason to think he will be CP in the merge, in my opinion. As for Ethan, I believe he got no confessionals and only 1 TCQ. He may have had a brief moment of strategy about voting out Clarence but I can't recall exactly.

There were quite a number of us who voted CPNN on him for valid reasons. I still think part of this OTTNN phenomenon was because people wrote him off before the episode since he was supposed to be this huge villain and thought that he had to be OTTNN because he was a villain. I'm sure you will disagree. Anyway, if "Russehole somehow wins" they WOULD edit him like this in the premiere. Recall that all of their promos were promoting Russell to be the "biggest villain ever" before the season. This was their hook to get people to watch, so whether Russell wins or not, of course they were going to give him a huge negative edit because this is what people were supposed to tune in to see. Regardless of if he wins. b) build the ENTIRE season around him with zillions of visibility and zillions of repetitive confessionals bragging how awesome he is and how dumb everyone else is b) I disagree on this too. Maybe he does exactly as he said he would from the beginning and manipulates everybody into doing his bidding and wins the game like he said from Day One. Sure you would think they would try to hide him, but then again, one would think they wouldn't have made it so clear that JT would have easily won a jury vote against anyone, etc. They are obviously trying to prop Russell up into the person who controlled everything. Maybe he does. Maybe they are trying to create a huge mastermind edit. Maybe everyone else really IS dumb. c) screwing with edited scenes so obviously in order to make him appear to be much smarter and much more strategic than he actually is c) This goes with the last point, but why would they both to do this? Obviously they were trying to make him look smarter than he really is, such as making it look like he found the idol before Yasmin received her clue. This makes him look like much more of a mastermind. People say that his edit is all about getting his comeuppance, but: 1) Aside from the first episode where I believe he was constructed as a huge villain in order to promote the season, he really hasn't been all that bad; 2) The editing has been very much on his side and his confessionals tend to be supported whenever he says something or calls someone "stupid," etc. d) hyping him so much as "the most evil villain EVER in Survivor history", when all we get is burning socks, dumping canteens and garden-variety namecalling and bragging in confessionals - he's not even the most evil villain this season since Benhole wrapped up that title in just three episodes d) Again, we know they like to create characters in the editing now, like Coach. This was about the only editing tool they had to promote the season, so whether or not he wins, I think he was still going to be edited and promoted like this. I think him winning win be similar to the reaction that people had to Richard Hatch: "That guy actually won?" It doesn't matter whether he is the biggest villain or the biggest mastermind; it's the intent of the editors that they are purposely trying to make him one. So why? So the audience cheers when he loses? Or because he is in the Final Three and brags to everybody about how he strategically owned them from the beginning and they were so dumb that they bought right into it? ----- Obviously his edit has been an anomaly that has effected how the season as a whole has been edited, so we have to look at why and then work around it. If Russell wins, is it "Edgic?" It doesn't follow the typical guidelines but the intent of the edit is clear and has been from the beginning. If Russell loses, then the season is about how he loses and that means that someone like Mick, Jaison, or Natalie can win. Shambo can't logically win. Some of you will say that Mick's edit took a big hit this week but I'd say it still looks the best based on the guidelines. KittyPryde1 makes a good point about Jaison. Since Episode 4, Natalie's edit has suggested she will face the jury but based on Edgic she has been eliminated and Edgic suggests that she won't win, though her story might imply otherwise. I stick with Mick based on Edgic. That doesn't mean I even have to think he will win; there is a difference. But it means that his edit is still the best based on a set of established guidelines, even though he's boring and we know little about him.

Natalie is looking good - IF we could see her and Ashley as twins getting a collective edit at the start. They were were edited as the two dumb blondes that Russ alligns with (before Jaison, before Mick). Ashley had to get primary attention because she was several times the decoy boot, so Natalie was hiddeen behind her. Danni's ep.1 sucked as an individual, but collectively the "Strong Nakum Women" got a great positive edit. Official EdgicTheory doesn't deal with the concept of collective editing, but we all know that tribes like Raro, Fang, and Gulu get editing as a group that rules out their individual members. Marisa, Ashley and Natalie were all the "stupid" blondes (and a brunette) from Episode 1. Betsy talked to Natalie about her women's intuition regarding Russell. Natalie then describes her strategy to us in Episode 3. In this merge episode, she gets a fairly long confessional about finding crack in Galu, and is edited as turning the vote on Erik. Russell then tells her she didn't do it; she only thinks she did. Supposedly "stupid people" will be Russell's undoing -- they won't vote for him and/or will win against him. Or Mick wins. ...Or maybe Russell does, instead.

Yeah, sure we'll vote the way you want us to vote and flush out the idol" He explains his feelings "I could leave this game easily knowing he went before me" (He said the same thing about BEN) ...Jaison did NOT threaten to quit in this episode nor did he in any other episode...(but it does create doubt) Natalie goes to work. We warns Russell. "This is the first time I don't know nothin!" This along with his TC edit makes Jaison TOTALY CP this episode. It was Jaison's plan that we saw come to fruition. She was all over the second half of the episode, and just about the only person not named Russell to do anything strategic.
