Psychiatrists to Philly fans: Just smile, relax, pick new team after Yankees win World Series title

Feeling a little blue, Philly fans?

Well, here's some advice from top sports psychologists to help you get through this difficult time.

"Stop crying," said John Murray, a Florida head doc who massages the minds of athletes and fans. "Not everybody can be No. 1."

The Yankees crushed the dreams of Phillies fans last night, triggering foul-mouthed rants, bouts of depression - and, of course, the downing of many gallons of beer.

But alcohol, experts say, is not the answer.

"Don't drink. It will make you more depressed," Murray said. "There is a way you can recover from coming that close and not making it."

He paused.

"You need to become a Yankee fan," Murray added.

Hey, doctor's orders.

New Jersey psychotherapist Jay Granat preaches mind control to sports nuts. He urged Philadelphians to find a treadmill and burn off their grief.

"Put down the cheese steak and go get some exercise," Granat said.

Exercise gives the brain an endorphin boost just like watching a winning game, he said.

Or, hang out with other sad souls and focus on finding happiness together.

"Spend time with your friends and family. Isn't it the City of Brotherly Love?" Granat asked.

Honest Phillies enthusiasts said that until last year's World Series win, they were accustomed to being second-rate.

"Being a Philadelphia fan, always expect the negative," said lifelong Phanitic Mark Zwick, 37, who lives in Philly's Center City. "Losing becomes a way of life," he said.

Security guard Brian Lipscomb, 42, of West Philadelphia is planning to drown his depression with rum.

"It will take me a least a month to get over this slump," he said last night. "Our heavy hitters weren't batting well as they could. We could have won this game."

Kiddie sports camp owner Jeremy Treatman, 43, said Philadelphia is now a city of sadness.

"People are walking around with a mental hangover," he said.
