This doesn't sound remotely religious or political. Guy wanted out, he couldn't stand it, and he just lost it. Terrorists wouldn't send in a
sleeper to spend eight years in the military, just so he could shoot a handful of people who are probably all lower-level, not like they're generals or
anything.

i did read that this dude graduated an army medical school so that may not be the case here. If you attend the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, you are serving while in school, so that's 4 years straight off. After you graduate, you are required to serve seven more years in one of the branches of the military, including the Public Health Service. I don't think the army has its own medical school. My understanding is that you go to the school and pick your service while there. Not that that bit is necessarily relevant to this discussion... |

I think that many of your comments are relevant.
Better that this is a "random nutjob" then that terrorists have infiltrated our military, don't cha think? |

BTW, a residency after graduation is NOT counted toward your service. So, I would guess that the average person going to the USU is serving 10 years
post-graduation. And they know that going in. That's why the education is "free".

This makes me think about the Republican theory that if everyone is carrying a gun, then it would be impossible for anyone to go on a shooting
rampage like this. It's why they're always arguing to allow concealed handguns everywhere. I assume there are plenty of people with guns on an Army
base. So much for that theory.

You discount a theory based on a personal assumption? I assume your assumption is based on personal military experience. Did you carry a weapon and live rounds
when stationed at a domestic base?

I'd still wager that he used his access as a therapist to find a couple of easily-manipulated partners. There's just nothing about this so far that suggests anything more than a few guys who really, REALLY didn't want to go back to Iraq, and who were pissed enough about that prospect that they decided to take action, rather than take a more passive way out. If this were an actual terrorist plot, wouldn't it make more sense to wait until getting in-country, where through intelligence alone (shrinks hear lots of good, up-to-date shit) he could cause more damage? Combine that with the access to more firepower for his uniformed partners, and they could have pulled off a pretty major strike. It would've been a HUGE public-relations coup for Al Qaeda at the very least. |

If he hated things so much, why didn't he just off himself? Why take a bunch of people down and then have to face the awful jail time? Talk about frying
pan into the fire.

They've released the other two suspects, I thought?
His religion could definitely have played a part in his frustration, but we'll never know unless he wrote about it or expressed those feelings out loud to someone. |

Suspected Fort Hood shooter had been on radarBy Associated PressThursday, November 5, 2009 - WASHINGTON - Federal law enforcement officials say the suspected Fort Hood, Texas, shooter had come to their attention at least six months ago because of Internet postings that discussed suicide bombings and other threats. The officials say the postings appeared to have been made by Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, who was killed during the shooting incident that left least 11 others dead and 31 wounded. The officials say they are still trying to confirm that he was the author. They say an official investigation was not opened. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case. One of the Web postings that authorities reviewed is a blog that equates suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades. |

Yeah, they released the other two, no ties to this.
Number of dead is down to 12, one of the females survived. And the shooter is alive. |

So according to the press conference, the shooter had an automatic?
Can't wait for the gun nuts to defend this once again. "Guns don't kill people, people do." |

he complained that he was discriminated against and people made disparaging remarks about his religion, so it did play a part in that way.
as for why he killed others instead of just killing himself, he "equated suicide bombers with a soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save the lives of his comrades." so something like thinking that if he killed the leadership sending troops overseas, then he's saving troops from being sent to war. confused and stressed and desperate and nuts. why the hell did they ignore the crazy guy and escalate the whole thing by sending him to the mideast? |
