However, shows like Survivor and DWTS are mostly built around the suspense of who stays and who goes as opposed to anything else, so there would be no reason for Survivor to have accelerated losses in viewers unless the show dropped in quality.

And I guess you can throw in TAR 9 or 12 (despite the fact their winners were terrible), and there you have the only truly enjoyable seasons of TAR.

The "storylines" now tend to focus on one person in a very cartoonish way (Coach, Russell, etc.) or just pure strategy (Micronesia). Pure strategy is NOT fun to rewatch, because once you know the outcome there's no mystery.

I think they give a dynamic edit to that person in that they have episodes to hate coach and also one episode to love him. This is what they've always done. Inversely, they've had episodes to love sugar and one episode to hate her. Aside from those players, I think we were able to get to know everyone else. Strategy is boring, and I don't think the new seasons are revolving around strategy whatsoever... infact the past few episodes of this season were solely about the struggle to survive and people's mentality.

Because they still need actual footage of camp life, they pick out the most cartoonish thing they can find. More diarrhea of the mouth from Hatch. Survivor Thailand was the last season that showed a lot about the people and actual footage of camp life and guess what, that season is generally disliked by casual viewers and was panned by most TV reviewers. This is the main reason why production changed the focus to be more about the game (including challenges and HII) which increases the action and suspense that most viewers, who don't spend a lot of time thinking about an hour of TV, (unlike obsessed Sucks posters who need to get a life) want to see in a TV episode. There are some people who would rather watch Helen go on and on about recipes (boring) and would rather watch Frank communicate with an elephant (incredibly lame). Personally, I would rather watch an hour of suspense filled TV rather than that slow moving stuff.

Ironic how things have changed now though, lol.

Ironic how things have changed now though, lol. Indeed. I have no problem with strategy, Tullfan2. I want the strategy to be organic, and not based on something cheap and exploitative like the HII. The show shouldn't be about blindsides, but about why these blindsides happen. Why should I care if X goes home when I have no emotional investment in it? Even sports fans have emotional baggage when it comes to watching games. If it was merely about tactics and skill, there would be no emotional investment. And how can a static show like Survivor be suspensful? The suspense comes from the possibility of someone you like or hate going home.

We got 3.7/10 in 18-49. I was hoping for an improvement on last week, but treading water is fine, especially since FlashForward is dropping like a stone in the ratings.

According to that story, "Survivor: Samoa" brings in $152,246 every half-minute. Of course, as the article points out, the dollars that "Survivor" and DWTS bring in is still well below the dollars brought in by the scripted shows.
