Except most planes, at least the commercial jets, are flying on autopilot. Blacking out for two minutes wouldn't cause the plane to crash; the obvious example is the Northwest plane that overshot its destination by 150 miles because the pilots were on their laptops. The only planes that should be crashing are the ones that are taking off or landing. The show seems to get this right (otherwise there wouldn't be any planes left for characters to use) but it still doesn't explain why every skyscraper in LA is on fire. I guess I'll just have to take it to mean a lot of people were smoking at the time.

Yeah but Anti are planes that are just taking off or landing (or circling waiting to land) on auto pilot? I don't know anything about piloting a large plane but I would assume that auto pilot is just when they reach cruising altitude or whatever. I assumed that any planes over L.A. and any other city with an airport would depend on their pilots flying controlling them and thus probably crashed.

ETA: OK I didn't read your post carefully enough and I see now that you mentioned taking off or landing. That stream of 24/7 planes I was talking about was taking off and landing planes. There are 2 international airports in the L.A. area (LAX to the west of downtown and ONT directly east) and many smaller ones. The Burbank, Long Beach and John Wayne in Orange County are all fairly busy passenger airports that form a ring around downtown Los Angeles.
