I've always wonderered if the Starks could have eliminated 1 or 2 political fuckups and still been a force.

Here's what I can come up with right away.
1. Sending Theon to the Greyjoys
2. Letting Caitlyn live/be anywhere near Jaime
3. Going for Westerling Poontang
4. Not keeping more watch on Roose Bolton
5. Letting Edmure live/be anywhere near any command decisions

Their best option would have been if Tywin had been kept away from King's Landing. Stannis would have sacked KL and beheaded Tyrion, Cersei, Joffrey and, likely, Tommen. Robb could have then traded Jaime back to Tywin for some very generous terms (like an alliance)- but that would require checking his ego at the door. Lannister/Stark/Tyrell beats Stannis and then pwns the Greyjoys.

Of course, if the Greyjoys hadn't been such fucks none of that would have mattered. A Greyjoy/Stark/Tully alliance, while still inferior in numbers to a southern alliance, has better troops, a better navy and a better position.
