There really is a subtle beauty in her vocals on many of the songs (TH in particular as eraserhead mentioned) that is so different from the power belting on songs like JAD on her previous albums. Subtlety is a difficult thing to pull off sometimes but when it works it really works and it gives you chills, possibly more so than a big booming vocal can in many cases. It just strips the emotion of the lyrics down and makes it very raw and apparent and beautiful. I'm typically more of a fan of more subtle vocals than glory notes in general and even prefer the more subtle performances from many singers who are all about the glory notes usually, perhaps thats why I'm enjoying this album so much. It takes Carrie's brand of Country and brings it even closer into the realm of the kind of music I enjoy most.

Is there a "powerhouse" ballad?... maybe not, but this CD brings the BEST ballad which IMO is "TH"... TH > IKYW > WY In terms of commercial success, perhaps this isn't her best album. But as an artist & a developing singer/songwriter - this is her best album, IMO.

Carrie never had to prove the power of her voice but IMO she needed to prove that she was more than just a belter and I think she's done it. If she doesn't release TH as a single I'll be seriously disappointed. In terms of commercial success, perhaps this isn't her best album. But as an artist & a developing singer/songwriter - this is her best album, IMO. Exactly! I think most artists use their 3rd album as a period of growth (or they should) to try new things even if it means fewer sales.

But as an artist & a developing singer/songwriter - this is her best album, IMO. I wouldn't worry that fast about the commercial viability of the album. Critics aren't necessarily the best gauge for what is going to be commercial successful and what isn't. Lots of critically acclaimed things aren't commercially successful and lots of stuff that gets widely panned by critics becomes a hit. Critics are just random people anyway, they just have pretty sweet jobs, oh how I wish I got paid to give my opinion on things.

So far the songs I've downloaded from this album are much better than anything on CR or SH IMO. Carrie has learned how to reign in her power vocals and rely on the beauty in her voice instead of the power to express the emotion she's trying to convey. I've always wanted Carrie to learn subtlety and I think she's nailed it on this era. I like that Carrie can belt out I know you won't but I like that she can give me chills with Temporary Home by singing so softly the lyrics "I can see God's face" I think Temporary Home just moved into the #1 position as my favorite Carrie song EVER! so so beautiful... seriously... ♥s in my eyes over that song! Hum, agreeing with this right now. I also see that you can show off vocals without going 'big' We know she can do that as she had so many on CR that were window breakers. To hit a soft note is probably just as hard as nailing a big one. As you just mentioned, "I can see Gods face" Yea hitting that in a studio is one thing but to do it live might be as hard as the big notes on ITYS. 4:15 on that video I posted I think she hit it exactly like on the CD.

Some of the writers seem anti-Carrie in general and some seem like they still think Carrie is great, they just aren't sold on Play On.

The only part I thought "wow" was near the end when she sang "God's face" or whatever. It was nice. The rest of it was really meh. Yeah, it has a great message and all of that, but so do sooo many other songs. Yeah, I do miss the belting. I love, love, love the belting. It's what drew me to Kelly and Carrie, J-Hud, Jordin, etc. It's what I love from a female artist. IMO, CR had her best ballads - JAD and IKYW. JAD touched me more than TH does and IKYW is just a ridiculously amazing non-stop belting ballad. <3 Even then, with the uptempo songs, I don't think they're as good as previous albums. All-American Girl wipes the floor with all of these. Even Flat on the Floor... or Crazy Dreams (mid-tempo). There's just nothing on here, again imo, that stands out as something that would make me want to listen to this album over previous ones.

Critics are just random people anyway, they just have pretty sweet jobs, oh how I wish I got paid to give my opinion on things. oh i haven't read any reviews.. and ITA u would make a great critic <3 The more I listen to the leaks, the more I am liking the other singles (besides TH & Change) I just don't hear as many "hits" as I did with SH & even CR... but that's just me.. maybe I need a few more listens.. and for me.. a "commercial album" doesn't always mean their best album... as a Kelly fan, MD is one of my FAVE albums ever For me, CC was a piss poor choice for a single.. ESP the lead single.. They should have started with Undo It...

You can't help what you love I suppose. I love, love, love, love, love the subtlety and I'm excited to hear it on Carrie's album. I mean I've always loved her voice but I like hearing her development as an artist and the different tones and colours of her vocals. maddx I so wanna be a critic. Best job EVER! I wanna be a writer in general but I'd be suited to be a critic since I'm such an opinionated bitch. Personally I'm totally down with CC though as the lead single. I get into that one man. Maybe you have to be a woman to relate to it, you and Miki, both males seem to be the biggest non-fans of CC. Maybe not but I think its great. She said she already had more money than she knew what to do with and this was about singing things that mean a lot to her and are fun to sing too. The only ones to sell a million in 2009 are Taylor, Rascal Flatts and Miley........come on, MILEY !!! So critics can say whatever they want but the sales are there for many other reasons. Yet, right now sales are in teh shitter for most folks. Will Glee or MJ's second week hurt Carrie. I don't know.....might might not. I assume if you're a fan of Carrie you already are getting it. I love the CD and since I have them on my PC and zune and another things that stores mp3's I can listen to all 3 Cds in a mixed rotation.

Eh, Megan would never win an Idol show like AI. Matt G was my favo anyway, I wanted him to win it. Its rare that a favourite of mine actually wins Idol, much less more than one favourite winning in any given year so I'm glad I've saved my win for Hayley. Hayley is one of my all-time favourite Idols, right from her audition like Carrie. <3 Come on maddx, "Undo It" was partly formed in Kara's pea sized brain. How good can it really be?
