MADRID - Spanish actor Jose Luis Lopez Vazquez, star of films like "El Pisito" (The Little Apartment) and "Mi Querida Señorita" (My Darling Girl) died Monday at his Madrid residence after a long illness, sources close to his family told Efe. He was 87.
The actor, who was born on March 11, 1922, in Madrid, had been ailing for a long time, ever since his return to the big screen with the film "Y Tu Quien Eres?" (And Who Are You?) by Antonio Mercero that was shot two years ago.
Throughout his career he received numerous prizes including gold medals from the Spanish government for Fine Arts in 1985 and for Work in 1997, the 2002 National Theater Prize and a Goya Prize in 2004.
Among his films were such titles as "Placido," "El Verdugo" (The Hangman), "Peppermint Frappe," "Atraco a las Tres" (Holdup at Three), "La Prima Angelica" (Cousin Angelica), and the "Patrimonio Nacional" (National Heritage) trilogy by Berlanga, as well as the great television hit "La Cabina" (The Cabin), which won an Emmy Award in 1973.
He debuted in 1940 at the Maria Guerrero Theater in Madrid in the play "El Anticuario" (The Antique Dealer) by Enrique Herreros.
