He was in the minority alliance. It was either him or Gina.

Mia was surprised it ended up being 5/3 and not 4/4 That is NOT a blindside. A blindside is when someone does not expect to be in danger, at all. Not when someone thinks it could be them. Trish from Pearl Islands was a blindside. (plan was, her Jon, Sandra, Sawn vote Rupert, they were sure Crista and Rupert would vote for Sawn) Liliana from Fiji was also a blindside. Erik in Micronesia because he gave up immunity to Natalie after she promised him that he was safe. Candace in Tocantins thought she was the strongest female and they needed her. Randy in Gabon was a shock to him since the idol was a fake and he was told it was real from Bob. As a viewer, I was only really stunned when Christy (Amazon) and Edgardo (Fiji) left. oh and Gretchen in Borneo.

John said in an interview that he got Kathy to tell him that he was the one going, and then he told the other three that they were free to vote for them if they wanted (which Zoe did to try to buy herself time, but it actually didn't do anything). So no, John was not a blindside, it was just a major power shift.
