I do think, however, that consideration for diversity of musical styles played a role in them getting in the Top 22/whatever because no, I don't think some of them were as talented as their competitors.
The sucktitude of various CI peeps aside Canadian Idol didn't put those people on there to "try and change its image" as you allege. Those people got put on there because a)not everyone sees dollar signs in contestants eyes the way Simon does, the CI judges don't really have that kind an involvement in the whole thing, they get paid at the end of the day and that's it, they aren't as involved financially in the whole thing as Simon is and b)not everyone has boring ass shitty taste like the AI judges, the CI judges quite frequently picked the people you are referring to as suiting a personal taste. Not every Idol show works in the way that AI does because every other one is nowhere near as large and as big a money racket as AI is. Plus there's a certain musical tradition tied in with every Idol show and the cultural landscape of the Country it is produced in that produces certain different types of musical genres in different regions. Quite frankly I think the music taste of the general public in the U.S. is overall quite shitty and not akin to my own given the popular music pumped onto the airwaves here from America. I much prefer contestants like Nancy or Tyler Mullendore both of who would fit your category to the likes of many of the belting hoes I hear praised on AI and on American radio.
And hey- I liked Nancy. A lot. Just because I don't like all alt-indie folks doesn't mean I only like pop singers. Don't generalize about my tastes. I recognize how shitty Americans' sense of music can be.
Yes, I was thinking of Montana, Max, among others.
