I think its suffering. Some Survivors suffer minor pains or itching.

The bugs are brutal. I can't imagine how bad the itching must be.

But it sucks up a LOT of time. Did anybody really believe Jaison was going home today? On my season, the episode we booted Sierra, Sierra knew in advance that she was going home (the one time we told anybody, and it was a mistake), and the way she reacted to it - the way she fought it and eventually accepted it - I thought would be a much more compelling narrative than "Is it Sierra? Or is it Coach?" Obviously you could not do this every episode, but every so often it might be nice. ETA: The web videos this ep also showed how Laura, Natalie and Russell struck up a real concrete game plan. Why not show that? We'd have a much better sense of how the whole thing was going down if we got to see that in the ep. |

I can only imagine they have their time tested blueprint on how to edit in order to appeal to the general audience. There are people who will watch every
episode of every season of this show and yet don't really think much about strategy beyond rooting for their (often forced upon them) favorite.
Also, the final vote being read is such a huge part of the show's mythos that I think editing feels compelled to constantly work the "who is being booted" angle vs just giving it straight to us. Edited properly, the Sierra boot Stephen mentioned could have been classic. Watch Sierra suffer all 5 steps of grieving! That could have been quite cool BUT...would the general populus (read: not just those of us in major US cities) have enjoyed such an edit? It's hard to say, every time I start thinking the general Survivor audience is smarter than given credit for, a Bob or JT goes and wins the Fan voting in a show that hasn't seemed to really consider that maybe somebody OTHER THAN THE WINNER should get this money. -SJ™ |

It's strategy. The main reason this season sucks to me is too many coattail riders and under the radar players and not enough strategic players.

I just want more rain. I want these people miserable in between challenges and Russell confessionals.

Does the pretty boy mactor not bleed when you cut him? How can you belittle his very real suffering?

You both have it wrong. It's not strategy or suffering, it's personality that for me makes or breaks the game. Cook Islands had some great strategizing
but with really boring people and so it's my least favorite season. A great Survivor character has to have a combination of strategy (or lack thereof) and
personality. For me the moments that I remember are the ones that revealed a Survivor's character the most, from Sean's alphabet strategy in the first
season to Brian showing himself to be a total sociopath by literally patting himself on the back, to Fairplay faking his grandma's death.

I guess I'm going on the assumption that they cast similar people with similar personality traits. Every once in a while they throw in a Cao-Boi or
Coachbag for "flavor". It's the suffering and the strategy that seem to best bring out the more interesting personality traits in people, at
least that they'll show in the edit.
Intersting that all the things you listed growsie seem to be Strategy. -SJ™ |

It's hard to say, every time I start thinking the general Survivor audience is smarter than given credit for, . . . SJ, you must also think that the average Suckster is smarter than given credit for, because you used both "mythos" and "populus" in the same post. Heck, most people here probably don't even know that the word populus relates to trees, and the word populace relates to population. |

I think this episode pretty much concludes that we all prefer Strategy over the Suffering/surviving aspect of this show.

The editors did a good job this time for a change. We all knew Foa Foa was fucked, but like Natalie(?) said, there was dissension among the ranks. Russell Mr
Magooing all over the place started the rube goldberg of crappy strategy. Fun as hell to watch. Erik should get a special award. He was awesome.
