Having said that, I agree that most northern soldiers -- especially at the beginning -- did not think they were fighting against slavery. But southerners knew
that's why they were fighting, and they started the war!

You just paid 50% tax on your crop and can't even drive your buggy after a rainstorm..to the northern bastards with nice roads, bridges, etc... |

Only one Southern state attempted to secede due to tariffs (I assume that's what you mean by taxes) -- South Carolina in the early 1830s. When the rest
seceded in 1860 it was b/c Lincoln was seeking to halt slavery's spread to the territories.
