So was Russel having a heart attack, or just bradying down with a vaso-vagal reflex?
Neither. Probst is an idiot. The whole business of never seeing someone's heart rate "plummet" is misinformed, and Probst's producers should have had a medical person clue him in. It's not that Russell's heart rate plummeted when he lay back down. His heart rate accelerated when he sat up, indicating orthostasis, which means that his heart was working very hard (and failing) to keep his blood pressure up when his head was lifted above horizontal. That's why his heart rate went up to the 90-somethings, and came back down to normal (60-something) when his head came back down. The reason he fainted both times was that he was dehydrated and exhausted and unable to keep blood pressure to his brain while standing or sitting. This shouldn't have been a medical emergency. A couple liters of IV fluid, and he probably would have been able to go back to camp. Notice that the medics gave him time to hang out on his back having drinks. If Russell had been having heart attack type symptoms, they wouldn't have been dicking around like that--they clearly knew it was a blood pressure issue. |

One would think that after five straight days of raining, it would be pretty hard to become dehydrated.

Hydration is more than just water. Russell's salt balance was out of whack from poor nutrition, lots of sweating, etc. When the lytes get messed up, the
kidneys don't do such a hot job keeping water inside the body. That's why Gatorade is so popular. That's why a couple of liters of saline
solution would have been a lot more helpful than watching Russell sip from his canteen.

Again, funny how much fucking POWER medical now has over this show. I guess it's their show, they can do what they want, but it all seems like bullshit.
James' finger was fine. Jonathan could have gone on, albeit in pain. Papa Smurf and Junkie Mike were cast, seemingly with the foreknowledge that they would be removed from game. Now the remove Russell to give FoaFoa (meaning Russell Hantz) another chance when they *could* just have given him an IV and told him to take it easy. -SJ™ |

Most likely Airai would have thrown the Episode 6 IC to vote Jonathan out. His leg was starting to get gangrened.
James, however, could have easily lasted the extra day and he was slated to go anyway. |

That was fairly fainting for this episode.

Jonathan could hardly walk, he was miserable. Joe and James weren't that injured.

Maybe a slight bit of embellishment with Jonathan but you get the point. He didn't want to leave the game and sure, it was a nasty cut but it detracted
from the show. I'd rather have seen him lose a leg out there.

Problem is, medical emergency or not, this is a "game" and giving him a few bags of saline and sending him back would create an unfair advantage,
right?!

If someone passed out during a football or basketball game due to dehydration/low blood pressure, they definitely would not be back in that game. After some
recuperation and medical attention, they might get in the next game. Survivor is a 24/7 game, so the producers have a right and responsibility to make sure
everyone is capable of continuing in that game without requiring significant medical attention and recuperation. A couple of IV saline bags is significant
medical attention.

In basketball/football they are not all being deliberately deprived of food and water as part of the "game", I think that is the big difference here.

I liked the first half of the episode. I mean, when's the last time they focused on the hardships? 2002? These mactors in recent season almost look
they're in Club Med. Either because they leave the hardships off camera or they give those Hollywood types food and luxuries without us knowing, because
they know they'll quit if not.
But evacs episodes are always boring as hell to me. The only one that was good was Skupin's because back then we cared about the people and getting medevaced was so avant-garde. Now you get a scratch and they haul your ass out of there. |

I'm pretty sure the others who were yelling were the ones who weren't blindfolded. It was way obvious that something was wrong. His arms were hanging limp and Jeff was already acting alarmed. |

My daughters blood pressure got low once and she wouldn't respond to me. She did the same thing Russell did- she had her eyes open and didn't move. I
was yelling her name and slapping her cheeks. I really freaked out and screamed for my husband to call 911.
I can tell you it *really does* scare you. They act like they are dying and nothing you does help. (Obviously more scary to me since it was my family.) |
