People. Monica was CLEARLY N...deal with it. These justifications are pathetic.

I was looking at the old charts and can someone explain to me how Jenna Morasca got OTT with no positive tone in the episode she quit the game to return home
to her dying mother? I can't recall her making a single negative comment that episode, only coming off as a very sad and upset person that was meant to get
huge sympathy from the viewers for her decision to play the game again, ending with a tearful goodbye from the entire cast and INCREDIBLY depressing music.
Also how did Nicole go from OTTN in one rating and then when it was re-rated based on new rules, she changed to a CPN. That makes absolutely no sense how you can peg her as an OTTN character and then change it to a CPN. There's no fine line between them. |

That ASS chart is whacked. It was a different time era. Petition to use my chart:

Edgic's always been a work in progress. Our concept of the ratings has evolved and their use has modified.
I think it's very useful to rewatch old seasons, same as it's useful to review earlier episodes during a season. Looking back always informs in ways that we never could perceive the first time through. |

I haven't even rewatched ASS in a while and I can tell chapera rocks has a far better chart than the ridiculous one on the first page.

fat little fingers wrote:Perhaps. But to me this brings up the difference between tone and tone ratings. Weekly, discrete ratings are useful and fun, but they don't always adequately capture tone, and so neither do tone averages. The editors delight in including brief scenes, or just brief shots, that have the cumulative effect of shaping our feelings about characters over several episodes. The degree of positivity or negativity involved may be so minimal that these shots don't trigger a P or N rating for the character's entire episode. But they have an effect, and they can play a role in helping distinguish between the edgic chances of two characters with MORDs in the same ballpark. I think of this kind of tone as "undertone." One poster professes not to care about tone, only about fighting over tone ratings. That's not such an uncommon attitude here. But I think tone is the most underutilized edgic measure, and that it's a critical, decisive factor in many seasons. It's one way to tell, early on, that players like Katie and Danielle and PG aren't going to win. |

I didn't feel one way or another about her in that episode until I saw her in the rain acting all bitchy. I think my reaction is fairly typical and the edit was intended to get that across. |

RobVanStratus wrote: That "ridiculous" one represents the consensus of the Edgic community at that time. If you don't like it - tough. As for JennaM in Ep 3 - she quit the game. Remember that in the previous season that Osten got flayed for quitting. So all the syrupy music was required to drag her from an N rating to Neutral (or Mixed if you prefer). Her tone rating was extensively discussed at the time. |

Uh Jenna quit to be with her dying mother. Osten quit because he was a bitch that wanted out from day 4. She was shown to be a positive part in her tribe and
doing well in the game. No struggles with the elements, which she commented on when she left. She didn't leave because she couldn't hack it, she left
because she wanted to be home and realized she made a mistake in coming to play again.
If you don't like that little FACT, tough. It's ridiculous rating. |

I'm ready to put my lounge clothes on, my hair up in a "Survivor" bun, make some popcorn and watch the show, how about you all?
Something that I've been thinking of since yesterday....If there is a merge and it's 8-5 or 7-4, whenever the merge may be, someone besides Shambo has to go over to Foa Foa's side to vote out members of Galu. The first episode showed Erik and/or Dave saying John had to go due to his bad immunity challenge performance. Then weeks later we see John alone watching Erik find the imunity idol. Besides the negative toned women on Galu, we do not know the dynamics of the tribe. Maybe John is still an outsider and uses what he knows about Erik to start the pagonging at merge. Maybe it's he along with Shambo that goes over to the other side, if it happens at all. Just a thought, I wanted to throw it out there and see what everyone here thinks. What are we looking for tonight as far as ratings? What do Shambo and Mick need? Does it matter what anyone else gets tonight? I think if Mick makes it past merge, he will get his story later. Shambo probably should be less visible yet still positive? Both Russell's will most likely get a lot of face time tonight, just a feeling! I wonder if anyone is medivaced out tonight, if one of the tribes will still go to TC? They did when Mike left, maybe they will tonight. |

Once again, the episodes where the person leaving is not in doubt to the audience turn out to be gripping.

Thoughts during the episode
-Odd way for them to paint Ashley going home as all Russell, umm remember the rain? -Just started wondering, maybe they showed Russell threaten Liz last episode (and recap it) because Liz gets rid of Russell? Though someone probably said that last week. -Russel shown to be taking the rain well, Jaison and Mick, not so much, nothing from the two women on their tribe. -Yellow tribe is starting to look a bit weak in my opinion from how effortlessly evil Russell deals with the rain with no problem while they mope around and complain like he says, especially when he said the line about they could do something about it today but instead they just sit around and mope some more. Though this is evil Russell, so maybe it's not met to be taken so seriously, but the other tribe didn't seem to be quite so pathetic/having as hard of a time (in my opinion, but I think I may be overanalyzing the editing here). -Umm, not sure what black Russell was thinking picking himself for the RC when he said he was feeling weak in a confessional -Really dumb how the purple tribe guys went about telling Shambo about their plan, it could blow up in their faces next episode/in the merge. -Wow, no one gets voted out, that's surprising, but I guess 11 people after 15 days is too few they thought. Notes on Tone Ratings (I want to highlight these two thoughts of mine during the episode because I consider them the most important) -Evil Russell: Evil Russell does not deserve a N this episode, he's a M at worst, maybe even a P. Sure he was calling his tribe pathetic with the rain, but he really wasn't shown being evil to his tribe this episode or backstabbing anyone, he already named Liz his next victim last episode, Liz wasn't P this episode she was static neutral, so there's nothing wrong with him shown telling Natalie he's getting Liz out next. At TC Russell got to represent the underdog FoaFoa tribe more then anyone else, that 'fight' was shown from FoaFoa's side, with optimistic music playing when evil Russell was predicting the beginning of a come back, we were met to side with him & FoaFoa this episode. -Black Russell: Very sad and P sendoff for black Russell, probably a PP episode for him with how they included Jeff's speech to him at the end, that separates it from a P sendoff to me. Sure his scene at camp may have been M at worst where he looked kind of desperate and stupid tending to the fire in the rain while not even cooking anything, but it was overridden with the overwhelmingly P footage after it. |
