Ashley MORN5
Negative for all the confirmations that she just couldn't cut it. Despite the edit, between the lines you can hear that this group, including Ashley, knew what the TC outcome was going to be.

Liz MOR4M
Overall, we were meant to like Liz's character this ep. She was a hero of the IC, even while losing. But her blunder with Russel, and Ashley telling us that she just didn't trust Liz, gives her some darker tones.
Liz made a probably deadly strategic mistake by approaching Russ, rather than the others, with her insight.
Ashley's statement harks back to Liz's Ep1 fear of being stereotyped as devious and sneaky.

Jaison MOR4
The edit again has him tell us how he doesn't want to be there. But, his TC water polo speech may hint that he will overcome his initial desire to quit. He got to say so in the rainy hut scene.

Mick MOR3
Oh man, can you keep a major character this non-committal about everything?!
Still, his edit keeps purring on idle. He gets "nice guy" touches all the time, while he's Teflon Man when it comes to anything negative.
In such a screwy season, he's a scary blank slate, but he's Edgic's #1. All hints keep pointing to the remaining core, "get[ting] a break.", (Liz's comment about the 48 hour storm).
Now watch him be the next vis 5 boot or the upcoming, possible med evac.

Natalie MORP3
I think it's fine to look at Natalie's edit, as it is fitting more into Russ' big story. But, of course, that's her problem, she's a minion. This season isn't about Natalie.


RusselH OTTN5
I saw his last ep as repetitive and therefore flattening out. We aren't getting anything to develop Evil Russ' character. No conflict or doubt about his actions.

OTT - Over the top

1) OTT means a character that is being characterized or simplified. In story terms, they are the villains and heroes, the ones we love to love or hate. A consistently OTT character is presented as a distraction to the other players. Of course, not all OTT players stay that way, and often an OTT player will go UTR for awhile if the editors want to bring them back to the main storyline as a more well-rounded character. Contrasting OTT edits in the same player (OTTN v. OTTP) generally mean a more complex edit over the course of the show.
2) OTT players are generally always edited in a Positive or Negative light.
3) A mixture of positive and negative editing ends up being neutral overall.
4) Usually lacking in strategy, or strategy not expressed with much internal conflict - but they can have lots and lots of conflict with other people; no remorse if N and no "evil" strategizing if P - only focusing on loyalty or saving one's own skin

Without the introduction of conflict in his attitude or decisions, Russ has flattened out into an OTTN character who's reactions, thoughts and behaviors we have come to expect. His script has been basically the same each week.
This coupled with his visibility pegged at the top of the dial every week, makes him the biggest distraction of the season.

Got a confessional and a funny comment at the RC.

Dave MORP4 MOR4M
Nothing terribly P about his actions, but we are meant to like him and see that he's about the only one with survival skills on his tribe.
Dave showed us that he's thinking about his game and reflecting on his behavior. He's appreciated for the ability to make fire, but his stumble with Russel and his admitting that he can be arrogant expose his weaknesses.
I'm open to an argument that he was complex enough in his insight to rate a CP.


Erik UTR2
He's the potential winner who's stuck on the loser tribe. It doesn't look like it now, but we all know the Foa Foa juggernaut is coming at some point.
Told us about the angry ocean. Um-hm.


John INV1
John doesn't care. He just wants those good camera angles to keep on comin'.



Kelly UTR1
Ashley's character if she had been on Golly instead of Fooie Fooie.


Laura UTR1
Dodges INV with a little comment.


Monica UTR1
She tells us that Sham is "..my next choice to go." So is she the big mover-shaker on Golly or is it just in her mind? Sounding like she's gonna be around for a long while, which would fit her earning a coveted confessional in the Ep1 opening scenes.


RusselS OTTN3
Ah Russel, you were never Nice Russel. You're just an ass-kisser, because you're scared of being the leader. Russel will do what it takes to make nice with his tribe, even if it goes against what he knows would be the right choice.


Shambo OTTP4
We are shown that Shambo is getting the unjust shun from the Mean Girls of Golly. We knew, before she was picked, that she was going to go back to her real tribe in Foafonia.
The Shamster is probably the whole key to the Pagonging of the rest of Golly. Shamfans will rejoice in the post-merge slaughter.

Winner Pick

Mick, aka, Tabula Rasa.
My Edgic dials say they don't lie (this time).
But, my experience makes me twitchy. Scout looked like the One True Winner on Vanuatu, but she never developed a story and stayed mostly MOR.
Mick's lack of any development this ep kind of freaked me out.
Still, he's always on the screen each week with a decent amount of vis.
And he's "teflon". Or is that "empty"?


Players to Still Watch

RusselSH - If he was our winner, how would he be edited? His weakness is the edit takes every opportunity to put his nastiest comments in. Also, after Russ makes a crack about how dumb someone is, we are always shown a smarter person than he seems to realize.

That said, he is shown each week being thoughtful about his moves and explaining his reasoning when he needs to make a modification to his plans.

Jaison - Could his TC story herald his digging deep for his old fighting spirit and help him triumph over "the worst experience of my life"?
Other than his quit speeches, he's following Mick's pattern. (But, of course, there is the quit speeches.)

Shambo - I think she's getting the sympathetic screw-up edit. But, she's a more nuanced distraction than RusselH.

From Here It's Too Much of a Stretch

Liz- Never gets to comment at key moments in her (everyone else's) story. And INV hasn't failed yet.
I'd say she got the Ep1 intro to her character because she's part of the Foanian juggernaut.

Eric - The winner character that failed to launch. He's playing the game, which is more than most on his tribe.

Now that I know it wasn't about Betsy, I think it fits perfectly into this being a season about 'somebody else'.

Interesting scene to look at again, gr. I'd add the confessionals from eps 1 to 4 in which Russel crows about the incredibly stupid women that he's leading around by the nose. It's a probable set-up for one of the "stupid blondes" to hoist him on his own petard, to misquote The Bard.

But, that doesn't necessarily involve the win. One of Russel's "pieces of trash" knocking him out of the game doesn't equal winning. But it certainly does make Natalie someone to watch.

But the truth is -- the editors don't follow Edgic. We're the only ones that do.

Let's not throw the poor baby out with the bathwater, astro. Lol. You've swept up a lotta seasons with that one and the only one I'd agree with is Bob.

But, Edgic has always been a learn and adapt process.

So, you see Natalie as "extremely likely" to win Samoa, but your official Edgic standing for her is #4?
