Even more importantly, how does a woman who smacks her lips like that when she talks end up in a job like Communication Director!? I should apply for the job. I don't know what qualifies you for such a job, but at least I can speak clearly and don't have a fetish for murderous dictators. |

The real question is, can you pick and choose good bits from an otherwise revolting philosophy, or are they necessarily linked? i.e., do you always need to
throw out the baby with the bath water. Aristotle said that ethics was the practice of living the good virtuous life. By 'virtuous' he basically meant
the same type of virtues that most of us hold today. However, he said to do so, we needed to live in a slave-owning society, so that we'd have the leisure
time to practice living. I really like the concept of 'practicing' living well and I don't think it logically requires owning slaves. All
philosophy has developed this way, building on the good stuff and rejecting the bad stuff.

I love the work of Thomas Jefferson, but object to the fact that he owned slaves.
I love Charlton Heston movies, but hated his right-wing gun nut stuff. So, I suppose in some cases, you can separate the good from the bad like that. But then again, Jefferson and Heston never slaughtered millions of people. I suppose if they did, I might feel differently about the Declaration of Independence and Planet of the Apes. |
