Jay Leno sucks, period! I never did like him to begin with, and now with Medium on CBS, that is one less hour wasted NBC. |

I remember when CBS was the big-time mocked network. Then Survivor and CSI came along.
Then ABC was mocked, and voila, Desperate Housewives and Lost. Still waiting on NBC to pull its rabbits out of a hat . . . |

Yeah I remember when ABC was in the dumps, and then they had Lost, Desperate Housewives and Grey's anatomy all in one year and boom they were back. But
IDK, NBC seems like it's headed for trouble this year because I don't see anything they have that will be their Lost, DH or GA.
And I hope TNT does pick up Southland and it kills in the ratings and sweeps the emmys just so NBC could realize how stupid it was to give Jay Leno 5 hours a week in primetime. NBC hasn't had a hit since Friends, Frasier and even Will and Grace ended. Heroes was the closest thing to a hit but Tim Kring screwed that shit up with the season 1 finale and it hasn't picked back up since.

NBC could just sell more in-show promotions like how on "90210" all of Los Angeles seemingly drinks Dr. Pepper products.

As much h8 as they get I enjoy every show on their Thursday block.
Jay Leno may suck but CBS is far worse with how many hours are given to all those shitty NCIS and CSI shows. |

Cable TV will be the end of Network programming as far as prime-time is concerned. Yeah, CBS and ABC both went through slumps too, but they also weren't
competing with HBO/Showtime/FX/AMC. As long as the academy continues to recognize shows on cable, no one's going to be interested in network. Yeah, network
shows still have 5X the #s in some cases, but cable numbers are growing pretty quickly. If NBC/ABC/CBS don't give writers/producers full creative control,
they look elsewhere. As far as NBC is concerned, I don't see them rebounding anytime soon.

Office and Community are very good. 30 Rock sucks and I havent bothered with Parks and Recreation.
Thursdays are tough with Fringe and CSI and most DVRS do 2 channels at once. Survivor and Bones against Community hurts too. Luckily there is Hulu. For NBC, that is about all they have going for them. The 5 hours a week for Leno was stupid. They took him instead of Chuck. Not to mention they could have kept Scrubs and picked up shows like Reaper and Moonlight when they were dropped. NBC and ABC have one hour a week each that is good (Lost for ABC) and NBC could bring back Chuck. Meanwhile, USA has/had Monk, Psych, Burn Notice, and In Plain Sight, all of which are way better than Jay Leno! |

Except for a few HBO shows, most cable programs haven't been that popular. They get more critical acclaim and media attention than viewer attention. And
most of their shows tend to fall apart in quality after a season or two, like network shows. I remember all the hype for Damages in its first season and then
the second season was all over the place. The only FX show I can remember that didn't fall apart was The Shield.
The problem with NBC is the people in charge. They're wretched and have been for some time. NBC didn't pull out of their 80s slump until Fred Silverman was gone. Zucker, or Zucker loyalists, continue to have power over NBC. This trickles down to poor scheduling decisions and poor production choices. I don't think any of the other big three networks would have wrecked Heroes the way NBC did by keeping Kring around. |

Dexter, Weeds, Nurse Jackie on Showtime have all done incredibly well. Mad Men has done wonders for AMC and stupid reality shows that MTV puts out has
increased MTV's viewership pretty much by half of what it used to be. I interned and have friends working at Crispin+Porter, and advertisers are spending
more and more money on other stations instead of NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX. And Zucker has also have some great launches under NBC. He made some of its sister
stations extremely succcessful, including USA. He was the one also behind "Friends."

Mad Men has done wonders for AMC, yes. By AMC standards. Their peak of ratings has been under 3 million. This on a channel which is in the homes of most people
who have basic cable.
Those other shows have done well for Showtime, yet still not as well as some Showtime programs did, like when QAF started out. I might be wrong there though. The other networks are still deep in the shadows of the main 4 networks. They're getting more money than they used to get, not more than the networks. And that's dependent on these channels consistently providing hit programs, which both HBO and FX have shown can be a struggle. I love cable shows, I just don't think that they are some powerhouse and they're spelling the doom of the networks. At least not for a while now. They're too erratic and too dependent on a very fickle press. They are also too often overhyped, as many would read about and assume they're doing all these brave things no one else will do, then you turn them on, and you are often let down. Jeff Zucker wasn't behind Friends. He first got in power at NBC years after Friends started, because of his work at the Today Show. He was the one who convinced the Friends people to stay on the air a few more years. He was good at dragging shows out to try to hide that he himself didn't come up with a lot of good stuff. I think he did come up with Fear Factor and the Apprentice, so I guess that's something...

I'm pretty sure less than 50% of people watching TV on a given night are actually watching network TV. Cable channels are spread out and won't get as
high ratings as network shows besides football and extreme circumstances like a high-profile Disney Channel movie or Jon & Kate's trainwreck marriage,
but they also offer a lot of variety than the meager few channels on broadcast. And cable's still increasing while
broadcast's still decreasing. Hell, here's a nice chart with some wonderful data.
And since we have a thread for NBC, can someone make one for The CW? Dawn Ostroff's W18-34 strategy is a joke, and it's hilarious that Melrose Place is getting beaten by reruns on BET of The Game, a show The CW just canceled. |

^^Exactly Mega. There's too many channels today that take away from the networks. While it's not making a significant dent, it will in decades to come.
ABC/CBS will experience another fall too.

The ratings for those shows can also be very fickle. Didn't Jon and Kate lose a huge amount of viewers after the initial hype over the breakup wore off?

Individually, cable networks aren't a threat. But as a whole, they're a huge threat to the broadcast networks. Though they do benefit from certain
cable channels as well, and NBC having some big ones kinda makes up for NBC's primetime being a joke.
And yeah, after a couple of huge 10+ million episodes, J&K dropped down a ton and IIRC ended up doing worse than they were doing before the divorce drama started. |
