In an interview near the end of the show, He actually said the one person he would like to be friends with was Russell. I think it was her decision to split up. I'll try to find the interview somewhere

It's enough time to break a fragile or troubled connection. More than enough unless you have deeply rooted beliefs. He was able to watch her all the time, if he wanted. She was totally cut off from him, so she is more likely to be the one that suffered a problem. Sounds like she's worked really hard since high school. BB was probably the strangest experience of her young life. She may be mentally scrambled at this point. Shell shocked.
