They feel that if they don't very early set up a story of core group of 'heroes' and 'anti-heroes' progressing to the end, they will likely lose their audience. It's obviously an unsatisfactory approach for us cognoscenti but they obvisouly feel that any attention on the 'bit-players' is likely to dilute the end-game story and confuse(!) the hoi polloi.
