Even though Ben was insulting her, I certainly didn't feel bad for Yasmin because her arguments were just as ridiculous. I felt bad for Betsy, not for Yasmin even a bit.

Compare w/ Episode 2 of Tocantins - an episode where Timbira, the tribe with Coach - the guy who broke the OTT mold - goes to Tribal Council. There's still a -long- scene of me and JT bonding, with both of us explaining our thoughts behind it. They have to include stuff about the winners bc it's the series story arc.

When Probst pulled off the fishing gear he said "If you can't catch fish with this, GO HOME!" ... and Shambo couldn't. I guess my fear as her as a contender is probably what I expected: a crafted character, like Randy, because they are a character and are intriguing on multiple levels. Hopefully she goes far, though. PS: Laura's entire confessional was hilarious, I love this woman.

This entire season just feels really heavily edited towards short-term arcs, which leads me to want to say that her arc is more short term (Jaison's climaxes next week, Evil Russell is completely short term, Liz's and Ashely's complexity were both horribly short-term oriented, Ben and Yasmin were completely in the moment this episode). Long-term dynamics aren't being set up.

It was pretty clear that Russell was trying to recreate the JT/Stephen dynamic by courting Jaison. But it was telling that we heard what Russell thought about Jaison but did not hear what Jaison thought of Russell. The corresponding JT/Stephen edit had both men admitting -- howevery warily -- in confessionals/voiceovers that they genuinely liked the other one. No such double acknowledgement for Jaison/Russell. So yeah, that relationship won't go the distance. Oh, and I thought Yasmin got an extremely negative edit tonight, both at Galu, where at least there was some humor in her shtick, and at Foa Foa where she confirmed herself as a loud mouthed, tone deaf malcontent. When you manage to look bad in front of psycho Ben of all people, you know you've got issues.

If we're taking edgic seriously, there are so few contenders this season. I think that we might just have the biggest edgic exception ever this season. And Russell S. was INV1 this episode. But hell, the rules of edgic just might not apply this season (and I'm having a real hard time getting into this season, while I LOVED Gabon and Tocantins was good pre-merge.) So is Russell S. a contender by edgic standards? No. Anyone who says he was UTR1 is lying. But he still could win? I dunno. This is the weirdest editing ever.

Quick ratings: Galu: INV, with the exception of: Shambo OTT2.- lost part of the snorkel, went bathing in a swamp, didn't catch fish. Got negative reinforced SPV. Laura UTRN - even though she was right, her Shambo rant was nasty but funny. M doesn't work, nor does P or neutral. Yaz - OTTN. Got accurate negative reinforced SPV from just about everyone on Fiddle Faddle. She was loud, an idiot. Had no idea how to exploit the opportunity of listening in. Here's a hint, dummy: Listen. And not even trying to find the idol? Because there are lots of trees? There was something definitely missing from her edit, though, something odd. Monica UTR. I think she talked. Any possible winners there? Not by edgic standards. FiFieFoFum: Ashley: MOR. Seemed almost like a narrator. Not much in terms of complexity, but actually not a bad ep for her. Betsy - OTTP Like the beloved Gretchen, you couldn't win. The frustration was so obvious I felt for you. Ben OTTNN. He dissed Survivor and Jeff. Go screw yourself, Ben. At least Russell respects the game. Add the wood chopping, the racism, the "I tell it like it is" utter BS... You are an embarrassment. Elizabeth: MOR Many words, not much content. She seemed very pragmatic about what's going on, and Russell hasn't yet mentioned her. An intriguing edit so far. Jaison: CP. Tempted to go P also, because he was a ray of cogent observation and calm. Which, of course, means he's the next Janet Leigh in the shower person. Mick: MOR or borderline UTR. Considering the crapfest around him and the camerawhoredom, his edit was more reminiscent of Jaison's than anyone else. Mike: OTT. "I proved something..." Like you're proud of that? Natalie: INV. Sorry, but considering the hugeness of this tribe's possession time, her lack of visibilty was profound. Russell H: CPN. This edit has me worried. Oh, not because of edgic. If he wins, edgic didn't. That's happened before, and is no big deal. It's just that his whole schtick, his personna, rings wrong. I pray to the gods that he isn't a ringer, a mole. Because if he is that is the end of Survivor. He isn't just calling the shots, or is the world's greatest narrator. It's disconcerting and very un-Survivor to have so few visual nad aural cues on how we are supposed to think of him. He provided us with perhaps more Negative Reinforced SPVs in this episode than sometimes occurred in entire seasons. Everything he said, every insult, every snide comment, seemed to be confirmed by the edit. Right now they are making him out as one of the smartest players ever, yet they are also making him totally unlikeable. This is a profoundly different Survivor edit than any of the previous 18 versions. And it's not a good thing. We are clueless about the other tribe, with the exception of loudmouth Shambo, snide Laura, and obnoxious Yaz. Semi-decent people like Russell S were essentially ignored. The basic edit of that tribe is negative. And so too with FaFa. The impression is negative, perhaps even OTTNN overall. I thought Russell sucked the air out of the last episode, but Ben sucked the quality. I do get the sense that Jeff was very close to calling him out. "If you don't like the sissy rules, pal, there is a walkway there and you can leave any time. If you stay, you'll play by the rules. Got it?" Winners? I guess I mentioned them above.
