Well, you can't have everything you want so here is what I suggest, since no one seems interested in answering your original question.
Keep a fairly large and deep plastic bowl in the sink to hold the soap water (I usually let my silverware soak in it 'til it's time to wash them), and run water into your dishes as you stack them so that they too soak. Rinsing off and pre-soaking dishes is the main key to simplify dishwashing. With the bowl of soapwater, you don't have to run a sinkful of water, and you can rinse the dishes as you wash them. You will have to get one of those dish rack strainers you hate, but the trick is to buy this thing that you put under the strainer that has a tilt to it, so that the water from the dishes in the strainer runs back into the sink. This way you don't have to dry the dishes, just let them drain off and air dry. It's also a plus if you have one of those spray attachments on your sink, as they make it easier to rinse things, though it is certainly not necessary. One more tip: I use one of those wands with the sponge on the end to wash glasses, cups and silverware. It really saves the hands from excess exposure to soapwater, which dries my hands out terribly. Hope this helps. |

It wasn't intended to be funny. I've seriously been wondering about what I should do. This is what consumes people I guess. Only two people gave some sort of answer ---> THANK YOU Dishes will be the death of me I'm sure. This is why I'm tempted to just smash them all and at least be rid of them. Then I can move on to the next disappointment |

I can't tell you how excited I was to rush home from work today to write about dishes (write mind you) . . .

First ... I impregnate the Scotchbrite sponge with Method Cucumber Dish Wash. Then I go about scrubbing each item [pots, pans, bowls and utensils]. Then I rinse each item and set They air dry ... I put them away late at night. The DW does all the other stuff. I will not keep a heap of drainers and crap on my counter. < formula for nervous collapse ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is not a trivial subject; it is indicative of all kinds of things. |

I will never live someplace without a dishwasher. I can't imagine.
I hate the dishes though, I think because it's the one thing you can't put off till tomorrow. They've become mini-meatballs new chore. She emptys the dishwasher and then puts the plates glasses and silverware in. |

I will not keep a heap of drainers and crap on my counter. < formula for nervous collapse same here. I also use a towel for draining. I soak my dishes in a full sink for a while before I dive in- makes it so much easier. |

I see this thread has resonated with others as well. I knew it would. Dishes. I'm going to have to think about the best course of action. I have a small kitchen with minimal counterspace and it feels weird in there, unreal. I think I'm dissociating from reality in this crummy flat. And it's all because of dishes. Small spaces seems to get cluttered/dirty so much quicker, no??? |

My answer:
Marry someone who is very anal about dishes, sheets, and towels (and cars). I haven't changed a sheet in years, but they're always fresh and clean. There is always a clean towel hanging on the rod by the shower, and dishes are always sparkly clean. I also don't clean the cars or pump gas. |

yah, I realised long ago I'm not the type to do the married with kids thing. This is my humble little contribution to humanity. I'm going back to bed. I spent all night tossing+turning thinking about dishes and the schematics of the whole thing. Does anyone know where I can buy that blueprint paper engineers+architects use??? I wanna sketch out some ideas. |

Ah, Lila...yet another existential quandry! To wash and dry, or to smash and cry...truly meaningful questions.
I must admit that this perplexes me somewhat...I've always pictured you sitting at a black glass computer desk in a perfectly spotless flat, surrounded by framed art, cut flowers in crystal vases, a quiet Tchaikovsky piano concerto playing in the background. A sink full of dirty dishes does mar the imagery, Lila. |
