So are we talking singer-songwriters or lyricists or composers? Most people answering are going with lyricists or composers but not both

If singer-songwriters (in no particular order) - Lennon/McCartney, Jagger/Richards (what they wrote anyway), Prince, Bernie Taupin/Elton John, Motown in all its glory, Morrisey/Marr, Brill Building (Carole King etc), Bob Dylan, Todd Rundgren

Not sure if both but love either way - Michael Stipe, pre-"Born in the USA" Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Joe Strummer, Chuck D, Tribe Called Quest (jazz samples or not), Roland Orzabal/Curt Smith, Freddie Mercury, Tori Amos, Ric Ocasek/Benjamin Orr

Interpreters - Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Elvis

Singers that can't write their way out of a paper bag but love either way - Bono, Chris Martin
