As I said previously no one these days believes in Divine Right anymore so, yes, you are correct. But long ago most people believed in that theory hence if you believed in God then you must believe that the ruling monarch, whomever it may be, was placed here by God. And if you believe in God then you believe that he/she has Divine Right... capiche?

Good post, Eric, but I disagree with you slightly.

Look, it is my belief that through the good times and bad the monarchy still stands. And of the will of the people wanted to abolish it they would done so by now (or during times when England was really in the shitter.) Case and point: The abdication crisis of 1936 as well as what was happenint in the 70's and early 80's. The nation, during the latter years, was in turmoil. The issue was raised as to whether or not to abolish the monarchy. Some wanted it. Others didn't. In the end, the institution is still standing. Second, the aristocracy, and their power, really doesn't exsist anymore. Sure the Duke of Westminister is still one of the richest men in England, abd sure the Dukes of Devonshire still has one of the greatest working estates in the nation, but a vast majority are barely holding on these days. The upkeep costs as well as Death Duty taxes pretty much eliminated the upper class. Furthermore, they have no real power in the House of Lords either. The only thing they have these days are pointless titles as well as really neat artworks and tiaras.
