Danny's solos were virtually the same, too, as far as I recall, and his endless pirouettes are "tricks" as much as the gymnasts' somersaults are. Yeah, pirouettes are part of the vocabulary of dance over hundreds of years, but that vocabulary changes. Thirty or forty years ago, a lot of the moves that we see in hip hop (locking, breaking, etc.) wouldn't have been considered dance and now they are. Perhaps the acrobats are just on the forefront of what will in the near future be considered an integral part of the dance world...

As for gelling with the music, that is a much more legitimate point. HOW he executed the "tricks" is a valid complaint. That he used them at all is not one (IMO, of course).

Here is Marquis' solo (sorry. There's no "e" at the end as I spelled it before). The judges claimed this was too much tricks and not enough dance. I say they're full of shit.

Marquis was cut for one reason -- he didn't dance "masculine" enough and Nigel hates male dancers who are in any way what he considers feminine (i.e. flaming, as Nigel is a homophobe). I wasn't a Marquis fan, but I was outraged at the way he was cut and Nigels' BS comments. After that solo, I actually wanted Marquis to stay at least one more week.

Obviously it is a fine imaginary line in Nigels' head as to what is considered too many tricks when the contestants have the 15 seconds or so to"dance for their life." Obviously, unless you are a "chosen one" you run the high risk of having your solo considered desperate with too many tricks or boring with not enough flash in it. It's obvious they know who they are going to cut and they form their reasons around it in how they will criticize or praise the solos.
