And as a side note: I hate when Pasos are danced to anything other than Spanish-type music. O Fortuna was bad enough, but I've seen them dance it to shit
like Eye of the Tiger on Dancing with the Stars.

So, the people I really like has become a very short list.
Melissa, Jeanine, Kayla Kupono, Jason The rest can go anytime. |

There is ONE reason... ONE reason you want him to stay, Seaguy! I would add Janette to the list. Brandon was bearable tonight, but usually I want him gone.

Want who to stay? Jason or Kupono? I actually like their style and the way they move. And they don't annoy the fuck out of me like most of the guys seem to
this season.

KARLA & JONATHAN - Nigel was dead-on about this performance. When you have neither the technique nor the
characterization, you're left with a whole lot of nothing. Karla was actually better than Jonathan this week. The choreography didn't require the
technique or the strength that she's been shown to be lacking in previous weeks, and she did a somewhat better job of embodying her persona for the piece.
Jonathan was just a mess. His energy was so soft and so antithetical to hip-hop that it felt more like a bad Broadway version.
ASUKA & VITOLIO - Their technique and synchronization really were not that much better than the first pair, but they rose way above the other couple with their characterizations. Asuka looked like a Nagel print come to life - PERFECT for an 80's-themed piece. She has lacked the warmth and the goofy charm required for her roles in week two and week one, but this choreography and style suited her more. Vitolio also hasn't had the chance to showcase his personality previously, but this week, he could show more of who he is. They should be VERY grateful to Mandy for working towards their strengths rather than forcing them to adapt to something different. I predict that their "story" of how their relationship is developing should help them a lot with votes in weeks to come… MELISSA & ADE - I agree with the judges about Melissa's dress, but not about most of the rest of their critique. Melissa's technique was pretty good, and her waltz-inspired lines did add to it. However, it was really with her FACE that she sold the dance. Ade failed pretty badly in that regard. Nigel called him something against which Melissa can undulate, and inasmuch as Ade came across as a PROP rather than a partner, I guess that is true. His mind never stopped thinking about the choreography and it read on his face. Yeah, he was there for her in terms of being physically present and where he was supposed to be, but he wasn't there in a performance sense. There was no connection or heat emerging, despite what Kat and Toni tried to suggest. From a technical perspective, I found it odd that they seemed to have no problem with some of the more challenging and intricate moves, but bobbled simple things like certain hand holds. I think with another day or two of rehearsal, this could have been really good, but it wasn't tonight (largely due to Ade). JANETTE & BRANDON - Once again, I'm pretty impressed by this pair. This was easily the best hip-hop thus far this season, and both of these dancers are showing a versatility that is surprising. Brandon is so flaming, but he kept that under wraps in this character. I had no problem believing him in the role. Janette also embodied her role well, but the choreography reduced her more to posturing and posing as a rocker without as much dance going on. The one thing that made me not so crazy about the piece was the choice of music. That song was so nondescript and added nothing. KAYLA AND KUPONO - I was way more enthusiastic about this piece than Nigel, and I was very glad to see that Mary and Toni loved it as well. When Jean-Marc was talking about his conception, I couldn't help think about the Cirque-du-Soleil-esque Vegas show "Le Reve" that has a similar storyline. The waltz that Kayla and Kupono did would fit pretty seamlessly into that show. She was simply magnificent here (it's nice to see a pimped TCO who actually warrants the praise she receives), and he was an able partner. Unlike Ade, he was present in a performance sense, even though he was also clearly conscious of the steps. There were a few tiny wobbly bits (she stutter-stepped when she did the assisted pirouette, and I don't know what was going on with the ending), but the fact that I can point to tiny flaws is just because as a whole, the dance was so successful. RANDI & EVAN - I think that there was a fundamental flaw in this choreography. We were asked to believe that Evan was obsessed with watching Randi, but anybody who saw the dance can attest that Evan is the one we'd want to watch. There is such a monumental chasm between them in terms of their charisma, and Randi is the one who is lacking. That being said, they pulled it off as well as they could given this obstacle. Evan is just a phenomenal performer, and he lifts her [close] to his level (despite the fact that she almost knocked him flat on his face at one point). I have a question, though. What makes this style "contemporary"? To me, this seemed more "Broadway" (albeit not the cheese-fest of Tyce D'Orio Broadway), or at least "jazz"… CAITLIN & JASON - I'm really starting to feel sorry for Jason. Caitlin is such a freaking albatross around his neck, and it's totally unfair in my book that he is stuck with her week in and week out. It makes me wish that the pairs were mixed up every week. I get that Caitlin's solo last week was better than Ashley's and she arguably won her spot, but Ashley is a much better partner, and if Caitlin had been eliminated, I have no doubt that Jason and Ashley would have done this routine much better. I'm particularly upset that the judges didn't have a single negative thing to say about Caitlin when she was clearly much, much worse than him in the paso doble. I will say, though, that the costumers seem to love this pair, as they've gotten stunning looks both this week and when they did Bollywood… JEANINE & PHILIP - When I heard we were getting Philip doing a Tyce routine, I expected much, much worse. He impressed me by how well he embodied a different style this week. I thought that Nigel was much harder on Philip than he deserved (especially in light of how easy he was on Caitlin on the previous dance). Does Philip need to go even further? Probably. Still, Nigel's critique made it sound like Philip was bad and that he let Jeanine down. I don't think that is true. I do agree, though, that Jeanine has been consistently very good. My Rankings: 1. KAYLA & KUPONO 2. JANETTE & BRANDON 3. RANDI & EVAN 4. ASUKA & VITOLIO 5. JEANINE & PHILIP 6. MELISSA & ADE 7. CAITLIN & JASON 8. KARLA & JONATHAN In the first three weeks traditional ballroom dances (foxtrot, waltz, waltz) have been at or near the top of my rankings every time. This is surprising to me… |

Seaguy + Jason.
I almost have a crush on Kupono, but am not entirely sure. |

Thought it was a pretty good show. After three shows it's hard to tell how it compares to previous seasons...but I think I definitely like this season more
than the previous one
Melissa/Ade were the standout couple for me this week (in week 1, too), so there's a couple i'z officially rooting for. Love Brandon/Janette too. |

Are we watching the same show?
This season is nowhere near as good as last season IMO. Not even close. |

Overall I think this group is better. there are just no huge standouts like Mark, Chelsie or Katee.

Or Joshua. Last year had some great people, but LOTS of fodder (all the contempo-boys, for example). This year is more evenly matched.

I don't agree, to me it seems like all of them are fodder with teh exception of Brandon. THis group doesn't impress me at all.

I truly believe that once we get to the top 10 this year, Nigel is really gonna unleash his cold, ruthless, and relentless side with the comments. If you are
not GREAT, he is gonna let some people HAVE it. I think he's making it obvious who he wants in the top 10 and he wants them to slide in at all costs. I
wouldn't be surprised if Phillip got Bollywood and either a Mia Michaels contemporary or a shoeless waltz like Kupono and Kayla.

Glee! Nigel needs to work his Fox magic and force that cast to sing in one of the results shows before the fall
season starts.
Last season was God-awful. It was by far worse than season 1, and season 1 was pretty bad in comparison to the two seasons following. This season has a whole lot more potential, and I think its totally in part due to the girls. The guys are seemingly devoid of either tevlevision personality (Jason, Evan, Ade and Vitolio to an extent) or are so polarizing that half the audience loathes them three weeks in (Kupono, Phillip, Brandon, Jonathan). With the girls, there are no S3 Jamies in this bunch, and there don't seem to be any Laurens either. All of them have talent and know how to work the camera. I'd say that of the 27 dances so far, the women have outshined their male partners in 24 of them. What's even more amazing is that the best female dancers we never even saw perform until the first week. That said, I still can't stand that they had choreographers doubling up dances in a week. If their contracts with the show said they had to choreograph two shows, then I can understand them forcing the show to give them all their dances in a single week instead of having to devote multiple weeks to the show. No disrespect to Dave Scott, Shane, Louis, Tyce, or JM, but when a choreographer has to choreograph four dancers in styles that are not their own in just three days on this show, inevitably at least one of the dances is going to be panned. From this week's performances, I do have to agree with Toni that it was very brave of Jean-Marc to choreograph a Viennese waltz without shoes. The dance seemed off without the classic heel-leads that are so evident with shoes, and Mary definitely noticed that something was wrong with that picture. It was a good performance, but the lack of shoes mave have caused other technical deficiencies to stand out even more, and may have contributed to Jason's flimsy upper body (not that that problem would have been automatically fixed with shoes anyway, though). Phillip and Jeanine's Broadway actually wasn't as bad as Nigel may have been hinting it was. Phillip performed it, and yes, he got out of character a tad towards the end, but it didnt take away from the enjoyment factor of the dance, which says something about Phillip's dancing tonight. And color me shocked that I didn't actually hate Mia Michael's choreography tonight. Too bad Evan funked it up in a few places there. |

I wish that when they get to the final 12, that they have one week of same-sex couplings. Have they tried this before? This is my first season watching so
forgive my ignorance if that's already been tried. That would be incredibly interesting to watch and it wouldn't have to be all homoerotic (ahem,
Nigel). The bottom girl group and guy group would then dance for their lives, with one going home.
Dream pair-ups Evan and Brandon Phillip and Kupono -- wouldn't you love seeing them try some type of contemporary hip-hop kung-fu combat homage Ade and Jason Janette and Kayla Melissa and Asuka Jeanine and Karla |

I can't get into the Randi/Evan love. I have tried. I loved Evan last season and was pissed when he didn't make it to the top 20 and loved him again
this season during auditions.
They are both just so akward looking when they dance together. It's their height IMO that makes them look clunky and totally akward when they dance and I can never seem to enjoy their routines no matter how hard I try. The lines don't look right and they just don't flow. However... Jeanine is quickly turning into my favorite. Fodder does good! It will make the season for me if 1) she continues to dance as well as she has and 2) Fodder knocks off Kayla (or maybe even Janette) the (two) chosen one(s). ETA: I am also falling off the Pono love train. He DOES dance too much like a woman... it's distracting. He makes Brandon/Carlton Banks look like Rambo!! |
