I think the main reason they did it this way during the first Duel was because that was still when they only had half hour episodes, as opposed to now being an hour. Yeah, I imagine that's why they changed the format, but it was still way better the other way.

Why was the first duel so much better? I mean half the cast was the same, but the chains were at least somewhat unpredictible. Maybe because only one person started the chain? Maybe because people didn't bitch and moan about being picked to go in? I remember Wes even asking to not be picked, so he could prove himself while everyone here is a complete pussy. The duels were also more intense because there was only one an episode.

Plus the pair thing, which is stupid considering this is called the Duel, and the fact they have the winners make a list of the pecking order (thus deciding who goes into the elimination every week,) effectively eliminating all suspense and making half the show a boring waste of time since all the strong people are in the same alliance.

And when the original Duel was airing, we thought it was horrible. I was watching Battle of the Seasons today and it made me really miss the old challenges. I miss the ancient concepts like Challenge of 2000 where it was just 6 people from Real World and 6 people from Road Rules and they traveled around the country in RVs and competed. If they did something like that now, it'd be the same 12 people every season. :/
