That was priceless; he was so eager to help out - but, yet, clueless.

Finished watching Pilot, Part 1.
I've re-watched all of the available seasons at the time between seasons so I've seen season 1 quite a few times. However it's funny how I always pick up new things each time, even now. I remembered Jack performing CPR on a lady and sending Boone to get the pens, but I didn't remember that the woman was Rose, and I forgot that Sawyer used to smoke. It's interesting that Jack woke up in the jungle away from everyone else just like he does when they go back to the island for the second time. Highlights for me: Boone getting the pens (like others have mentioned) The big piece of debris falling a few feet away from Charlie and his WTF look. Jack telling Kate about counting to 5 after seeing the origins of that in the season 5 finale. Jack telling Kate "you're not running now" and her expression knowing that all see does is run. Hurley giving Claire the 2nd meal. Charlie's comment on the monster knocking down trees "Terrific." Locke and that creepy thing with the orange slice cracks me up every time! Hurley misspelling "bodies." Locke sitting in the rain, arms outstretched. Great episode overall. |

I've watched Tabula Rasa, and I had forgotten that Kate got the first character-centric episode. I've never had the Kate-hate that some here
have, but I certainly liked Kate a lot more earlier on than I do now. The guy playing the marshal did a great job, because even though Kate WAS a criminal,
and he WAS after her for a legitimate reason (both of which we learned later), he seemed so creepy and weird that it made me want to see Kate escape him and
get away.
Of course, now we know that Kate's criminal past started at a very young age, at 8-10 or however old she was when Jacob touched her and paid for her lunchbox. That whole scene reminded me a bit of a short story by Anton Chekhov called "A Problem", where a guy's uncles save him from having to go to trial, only to see him turn around and use them and become more of a criminal because he never had to face the music(anyone else read this?). Perhaps if Kate had gotten busted then it would've made a difference later on. ETA: I also liked when Kate took the gun from Sawyer (that happened in premier, but the gun was still separate from the clip at the beginning of this episode). This set up a running gag for the whole series. The guys all know that Kate is sneaky and a bad-ass, but they always turn their backs on her so she can get one over on them. Must have happened a dozen times over the five seasons.

Off for Memorial Day, so I watched Walkabout too. There were some pretty funny moments in this episode!
1. The pigs on the plane--they all thought the monster was there, and it was just a couple piglets (but Charlie still managed to get wounded) 2. Hurley wrestling with Sawyer over some peanuts 3. The expressions on everyone's faces ("Who is this guy?") when Locke revealed his cache of knives--followed immediately by the Colonel Locke phone call, which totally made me think this guy was military before the reveal that he was in a cubicle! 4. "Helen" being a phone-a-slut--which I had completely forgotten about. By the time they showed the real Helen, I didn't remember this. So I guess he was just having the phone-a-slut pretend to be Helen? I wonder if this was planned or if they later decided to make Helen real. 5. Jack sees Christian for the first time, so I guess that Jacob/Esau was already checking in this early--wonder which one. 6. And Rose thinks Bernard is alive--I remember watching this the first time feeling bad for the poor crazy lady. Turns out she was right! 7. LOL at Shannon manipulating Charlie into catching her a fish, and then she and Boone squabbling in front of Charlie (Go save a baby bird or something!) 8. And the OMG moment at the end when Locke is revealed to be in a wheelchair. And this is an important episode for Locke's character development. It establishes that Locke thinks he has a destiny (first time he mentions it is talking to his douche-y supervisor about the double amputee who climbed Mt. Everest) and is the first time the "Don't tell me what I can't do" line comes up. Watching this episode reminded me that Locke creeped me out from the very beginning--and given that it's quite possible that Jacob = choice and Esau/Anti-J = destiny, this establishes very early on that Locke is naturally aligned with Esau and not surprising that he eventually becomes Esau's avatar. Do I think they had all this worked out in advance? No. But it is pretty cool how they tied early things back in later on. And I'm thinking that maybe Locke saw Smokey this episode? We didn't get to see what came out of the jungle, but Locke looked pretty freaked out.

iirc Locke did see Smokey but he didn't describe it until later? (I stopped at Walkabout, too)

Hurley misspelling "bodies." And Walt correcting him. 4. "Helen" being a phone-a-slut--which I had completely forgotten about. By the time they showed the real Helen, I didn't remember this. So I guess he was just having the phone-a-slut pretend to be Helen? I wonder if this was planned or if they later decided to make Helen real. In general, I tend to not believe that a lot of stuff with this show was planned out from the beginning, but I do actually think Helen was supposed to be real all along. |

For some reason, I was never creeped out by Locke. I guess I felt sorry for him from the beginning. "Walkabout" was the first LOST episode I saw. I
was hooked from the scene where Locke wakes up on the beach and wiggles his foot.

from what I've read, most things WERE planned out from the beginning, locke being the frontrunner for esau's philosophy of destiny was most likely one
of them.

Yeah, they say that, but I don't believe it. Do I believe they had a basic outline? Of course. Do I believe every little detail has been planed out since
the beginning like some other people? No way inn hell. It's not possible.

I'm with Cindi too on the basic outline. One thing the writers have said that I believe - they haven't wavered at all from how Lost would end,
be it one season or six. I'm sure there will be some variations from their original vision because of new characters/more time to develop. But I think
their overall concept since day one will be what we see in the end.
I'm surprised I've kept the faith on that one cuz they are some lying mothafuckers. |

i dunno, you'd think that it would be alot harder for them to tie everything together if it wasnt planned, i know EVERYTHING wasnt planned, a good example
is that they clearly had more plans for eko than what ended up being the case, but yeah.
to add a small contribution to the thread, i didnt find much that stuck out at me in this rewatching of the pilot but one thing that did stick out was vincent, just how he was like right there when jack woke up in the beginning and then when they go on that trip to the cockpit you see him watching them from the brush, it was kind of eerie. could there be more than meets the eye to vincent? since i havent yer rewatched more, when is he found? who knows what could have happened to him while he was missing. I'm not investing too much into it but its an interesting thought. |

I really love the music in the first part of the pilot. There are several times it really sets the mood for the scenes. When they go to find the cockpit of
the plane the music is so eerie.

Yeah I loved Lost music until I watched the extra on last season's DVD where he talked about the ascending or descending violins and the BONG BONG BONG at
the end of tense scenes and now I can't help but notice it all the time
My favorite piece is the Lost traveling music, Hollywood and Vines (actually starts at about :50 here) |

The Marshall's death still bugs me. Why didn't he just tell Sawyer to shoot him in the head? Or better yet, do it himself so there'd be no
guilt/accusations? It was always a lame way to get a little extra drama out of the situation to me.

lemurwrench wrote: I was thinking the same thing after maybe the second time he showed up. I miss that creepy watcher aspect of Vincent. I remember everyone speculating about him when the show first started. I also miss the musical montages they used to do at the end of shows like they did with Tabula Rasa. There are more of them in season 1, but I can't remember any from the last couple of seasons. I also watched Walkabout, since it was on the same dvd. Watching it now after season 5 ended you'd almost swear he'd been taken over the moment he landed on the island. Especially the way Tabula Rasa ended with the creepy music and his sinister look. |
