Actually, a lot of people from Oklahoma claim to be Southerners. They call it Little Dixie and they call Alabama and Mississippi the Deep South. I'm not
so sure on the Buckle on the Bible Belt claim. Anyway, Oklahomans tend to be more more religious, as someone's map previously pointed out, and
predominately Baptist. Oklahoma also shares the same historic political trends with southern states with Yellow Dog Democrats that are more closely alligned
with the Republican party philosophy. Oklahoma was the only state that all counties voted for McCain in the last election. There is also that Okie southern
drawl and that cannot be mistaken for someone from one of the Midwest states. Finaly, there is football - the true state religion.

Here is an entire discussion dedicated to that topic:
http://www.city-data.com/forum/oklahoma/213941-oklahoma-southern-western.html I don't care what anyone says, Oklahoma is NOT Southern...at all. And I agree, Maryland is not a Southern state. You can argue that states south of the Mason/Dixon line are Southern and while this may be geographically true, that does not make them a Southern state. There is a huge difference between being in the south and being Southern...just ask all the New Yorkers that move down here! |

...Does anyone else think that Adam would've had a better shot at winning if he had chosen to do an uptempo rock song as opposed to resinging "Mad World"....? |

Edit: Tamyra comes from Takoma Park, Maryland. Not southern per se.She was born there but lived in Atlanta for most of her life and even talked about it on the show. They promoted her like crazy here too. |

Honestly, it's all about culture, not geography. I was in the service with a girl from OK who HATED Yanks, but she was dating my friend from IL. They basically broke up cause she didn't want to bring a Northerner home to Paw (and dude was hardly a Yank.) |

Heh! I don't really care if anyone else wants to claim us.
Southeast Oklahoma is filled with a lot of hillbillies and western Oklahoma with a lot of rednecks. Over time, the hillbillies and the rednecks have interbred and you get the modern day Oklahoman. |

I didn't realize that hillbillies and rednecks were different groups...

Oh good grief.
Hillbillies need hills to be called hillbillies. Rednecks can survive out on the plains. That is why Okies call those from eastern oklahoma as the "hills and trees" folk. And, I'm just joking, but only halfway.

I meant in the last presidential election prior to their win. In 2003, North Carolina was still a red state. As someone who has lived there for the past 5 years, I'm proud of its turn to blue too! |

S4 - Carrie (OK) beat Bo (AL) - Midwest beat southern OK is NOT a Midwestern State. It is part of the South West Region, and at times just considered a Southern State depending on what "region" map you use as reference. |
