Her problem (well, one of her problems) as a songwriter is one that is very typical among second-rate songwriters: she compensates for the lack of musical quality by having over-verbose lyrics. A song is, first and foremost, music. The song they were forced to perform had a totally non-memorable melody, the sort of "melody" that is so generic and formulaic that she probably just pressed Enter in Windows Vista Melody-Maker software that comes standard with the home edition. And because the song is supposed to be about triumph or whatever, she goes for the famines and hurricanes in the lyrics. It was dreadful. The range was bad for live performances, I'd guess that the vast majority of the audience picked up 1 of 3 words, if that, and the overall impression was of two above-average performers desperately trying to put their own spin on a crapfest of a song. What a horrible way to end a competition - force the audience to hear the same crud twice.

Sorry, gal. You ain't REM. You can't do a patter song like End of The World as We Know It, or even Imitation of Life (which includes avalanches and hurricanes). That comparison is somewhat insulting to REM, but it gets the message across - listen to the melody of Imitation of Life - from the first notes it gets the message of the lyrics across. And you ain't Gilbert and Sullivan, whose word-storms were brilliant, funny, and melodic. You are a hack.

I invite all of us to do this - the next time we're listening to a pop music radio station, listen to how many words are actually in the songs. Some of the finest songs have a sparseness of lyrics that make each word pop out at you, with the words woven into the melody seamlessly. Damn, I hate these "created" songs for this competition.
