Yeah, I mail them a check each month like an old person.
Discover gives everyone cash back. I got cash back on my Master Card when I threatened to cancel. |

Am Ex gives Rewards that are like cash. I get close to a couple grand in Gift Cards every year. Barnes and Noble, Talbot's for the wife, etc.

My bank has Tootsie-Pops in bowls by the tellers. You can have one....maybe even two if you ask them.

ilikelissie wrote:That's what we do too. Well, it's not cash-back, but we have 2 cards we use. One gives us cash towards our home/auto/personal insurance and the other makes a payment to our mortgage every year in May. I love it. We charge everything and pay it off every month. We don't even write a check, it's all done on that interwebs thing. To the original poster, pay your bills! We got under water quite a bit when we first bought our house, but we worked our asses off and paid it off. We did without for 2 years (no trips. no toys. no going out.) and I worked a 2nd job I hated and paid off the debt. Filing for bankruptcy isn't going to solve anything for you in the long term. You need to learn how much it sucks to overspend.

You need to determine if you have the guts to make hard calls. You can hire a lawyer to call for you. Often Credit Card Companies will negotiate a better term,
and remove credit comments. You can have excessive interest waived, if you can get on the track to pay down debt. You may have to reduce spending until all
debt is cleared. You may be able to reduce your debt by as much as 50% through tough negotiations.

Just claim backruptcy and start over, who cares about paying it back! Mooch off the system as long as you can.

If you're too fucking stupid and keep buying stupid shit and can't afford the MINIMUM payments, then maybe your existence is useless. :) In all seriousness. Phone the Credit card company, tell em your situation and they'll work something out with you. They'd rather get some money back then nothing at all.

About a third of my debt was for my mother's funeral.

If you're only paying minimums then you're probably approaching 80%+ utilization (obv not good - I used to run credit reports in the subprime industry
for a living).
wrt to people saying bk, a lot of other things depend on credit - mortgage rates, employers run credit, even apartment landlords run credit. One thing you might try is the teaser rate game. Plow all available spare cash into paying off one card, pray you get a low-rate BT offer on the paid off card, then just start transferring away against high balance/high rate debt. link to someone who paid off cc debt at 65% utilization, page 2's post by grimjack explains the BT teaser rate game if you're buried in cc debt. You probably have way more debt though. sorry to hear about your mom. oh, and stop shopping. |

Can you go to the bank, consolidate your bills, pay off all the cards, and add it to your mortgage?

See , some of you are good at math and seeing what is the best way to go about money issues.
I just want to know what is the best way to pay off what I owe combined with having to deal with my car lease being up in June. |

I'm doing a land contract, so I doubt that would work out so good. Nevermind that I haven't built up enough equity to do any good anyway. How do people file for bankruptcy if they can't afford a lawyer? |

to file for chapter 7, you have to meet the means test, which means you have to make under a certain amount for your area. there are some exceptions, if
you're borderline -- but it gets complicated. for the most part, if you don't qualify for ch. 7, you'll be moved to ch. 13 -- in which case
you're better off working out a payment plan with your creditors, imo.
check the income level for your area, and then if you're over the limit, check out a means test calculator. http://www.usdoj.gov/ust/eo/bapcpa/20090315/bci_data/median_income_table.htm http://www.nolo.com/article.cfm/objectId/8400442E-EEE8-4479-A8D109AFB7E2E9CA/catID/283B9600-ECC3-49ED-9D9A20A3E13F42E0/213/161/128/ART/ regardless of whether you hire a lawyer to file the bankruptcy, you should still go see a couple. if you end up doing it yourself, you'll have learned a lot from those meetings. people do pro se bankruptcies all the time. and they're doing it a lot more often right now for bankruptcies, divorces, everything. some courts have put in place volunteer attorney programs, trying to match up unemployed attorneys with pro se filers, just bc pro se cases take up more court staff resources and time. but if you have a simple case, you can do it yourself. there are plenty of resources available online. if you have any complications, you really should use a lawyer. also, there are "petition preparer" services online. those people fill out the forms for you. they're usually a couple hundred dollars. they're not allowed to give you legal advice, but they can make sure you've completed the forms properly. if you use a service like that, try to use a local one, not one of the online companies, many of which are really questionable. (if you use an attorney, he most likely uses a service like this also, instead of preparing your forms in his office.) |

Have you tried transfering your credit debt (or some of it) to a low or free finance card? That is what we have done for a couple of years. It isn't that
much, but there is always something happening to the car or house, that we have to use the credit card so it is a neverending cycle. At least for right now we
don't pay the fees.
