Here's another 2x4 in the background. Something like they have to use the pole to hook something and drag it towards them? Is this the "tricky" part?

Is this even this week's challenge? Cause if it is, it is LONG. Why is Taj holding a 2x4? Neither Stephen not JT seems to have anything in their hands -
either they're still on their way out, or it's something you have to remember. Memorize the whirling operation symbols? Knock the one you want off with
the stick?

So they race along an obstacle course, memorize the math symbols, run back along the course, try an answer for the equation, and if they're wrong, they
hafta go back along the course and try again, until they get the right answer. Just like Palau's F5 IC.
JT or Stephen wins (thanks CBS) while Taj is working at the table and Coach is under the rope obstacle. I don't think there are any "stages" for this challenge. |

I'm thinking the far end of the course has the numbers they need for the math equation, and the first leg is racing through the obstacle course to that
end, memorizing the numbers, going back and writing them down. First two to get them right advance (which, yes, is probably where the hug takes place - Probst
is there to check they got them right). Then in the second stage, they look at the spinning books to see what the math operations are, then use them with the
numbers to solve the equation. It looks to me like that is set up for only two people, based on the number of "books", unless the Probst preview only
shows one person's books (although that seems like an impossibly long set of numbers to memorize, if so).

Maybe the long poles are to get the math symbols moving so that they can see them.

They're facing the opposite direction to the obstacle course at the tables, so the spinning books are probably behind the starting line. And it looks like
JT and Stephen are looking up as they're writing, so it looks like it's right in front of them.
On the other hand, upon further review, I think the Probst preview really does show only one set of spinning books, because it all has the green pattern in front of it. So that's a lot of digits to keep track of. |

Okay, I'm confused. The "spinning books" have the math symbols on them, right ? I agree that there's only one set of symbols that all
players have to memorize. I don't see any numbers on anything other than the chalkboard.

Have they ever done a "stages" one before where the second stage was set up for all the players, but only a few advanced? It sure seems like the
simplest explanation for having six tables is that six people are writing equations.
The vidcap with the equation seems to be on a white table. Maybe dreamteamer, maybe Stephen. The first two symbols written there are the first two on the green "spinning books" (??!!) It would be sorta silly to have multiple sets of symbols, one for each player, if they were all the same and people could easily see the other players' sets anyways. |

Yes, the math symbols are on the spinning books. I agree it's possible they're at the far end of the obstacle course, but I think it's more likely
they're behind the starting line, since the table face away from the obstacle course. And I think the numbers are what Taj is staring at, past the ropes
course - it's just that they're off-screen, and we can't see them.
The reason I think it's two stages is that I can't see JT giddily hugging anybody who'd just beaten him in a challenge, even if it's Stephen. So ILT's idea that it's after the first leg makes sense. |

I think the spinning symbols are behind the start line. My take is they start off by digging up something, go through the obstacles, then use the dug up item
with the pole to reveal the digits. I think each player has a different set of digits. They then memorize and run back, fill in the equation and try to get the
correct answer. If they are wrong they go back to check their digits again or check their math again. I think it is one stage and JT wins. Steven looks more
resigned but happy enough that his alliance mate won.

A few things i just noticed....
here are the tables (LtoR) yellow, green, grey, brown, blue, orange. Why JT's green table doesn't have the white stripe between the colours is beyond me but i don't think it means anything.
We know from other caps that the wide eraser tray is on the farthest side of the chalkboard from the challenge. So in this shot, with JT & Stephen bellied up to the chalkboard side *without* the eraser tray, it stands to reason the challenge is at their backs. Also confirming this is the fact there is the brown, blue and orange tables behind them (and jt & stephen are in reversed order) Also something to note, someone (taj) is at the blue table and is in the process of removing the cover sheet from her chalkboard. If there were no numbers or anything on it, there would be no need to hide it. Since the orange chalkboard still has its cover, odds are that Erinn is behind Taj at this stage.
I agree with what others have said about the poles. They definately look to be used to activate the spinning math symbols. If it were to retrieve something, taj wouldn't just be holding it loosely while staring straight ahead. The question that comes to mind with this is, if there is only ONE set of spinning symbols, why would there be a need for multiple poles? Couldn't a survivor just stand there watching other people as the symbols spin and reap the benefits of extra memorizing time? It would stand to reason that each one has a different set of symbols & numbers...all of which add up to the same end total so it's easy for Jeffy to verify the right answer. Add to the cap of Taj staring while JT is running back, the cap above would confirm they are about to head back to the chalkboards in that JT & Stephen are at the chalkboards when Taj (blue) arrives to rip off her blue cover and begin. Oowatanite said:This cap, to me, seems clear that they only have to fill in the math symbols. The majority of the chalkboard is dusty looking. However, in between each perfectly spaced digit, there is a darker area on the chalkboard. This is the proverbial "fill in the spaces provided" spots on the table. My guess is that the digits were already there (on the dusty parts) and the survivors just add the math symbols (on the dark spots) Also a thing that's got me curious is the other darker area below the equation that has dashes. It's two lines long, judging from the alloted darker area. That would make it seem like they come up with some sort of word/phrase solution which makes no sense to me. how can they go from an equation solution to that? At first i thought it was just 2 dashes for them to write the 2 digit solution, but considering there were 10 math symbols (making that equation super long) it doesn't make sense to put the location for them to write the 2 digit solution way over on the left like that.
oh and final thoughts, this table is Stephen's. The grey strip is visible on the table leg there to the left as well as the grey sides to the table. not that it really tells us anything. |

Is there any reason to believe the closeup of the chalkboard (with the numbers) isn't a dreamteam run-through? It's a pretty complicated challenge, and
that seems like something they'd definitely want a shot of during Probst's pre-IC spiel.

It is awfully controlled handwriting...
The dashes at the bottom of the slate concern me. Their obvious role would be to write the answers of the calculation above. Except everyone knows that you solve arithmatic expression by just starting at the left and plowing your way through. Just like everyone knows just because you make F5 doesn't mean you have a one-in-five chance at a million dollars. |

I think that is a dream-team vidcap. It is way too neat for a contestant during a challenge.

The photo where JP is shown looking at one of the puzzles (speculated to be reviewing the winning puzzle) and the photo of JT and Stephen hugging are shot from
different sides. JP appears to be a few feet away from JT/Stephen so I am thinking that JP is looking at JT's puzzle and that JT has won immunity. (Which
is why JT is so happy... duh)

Also in the first picture of JT and Stephen running, note that they both have sand on their legs and knees. They are obviously on the "return" trip.
Stephen is slightly ahead because he is already high-stepping through the ropes. JT's ropes are shown at the bottom of the photo and he is a few steps
away from reaching that point.

If you're talking about this shot, rower, this isn't a side-by-side pic. Notice the border going down the center? There's no telling the timeframe these two pics were taken. |

birdlady wrote: If the numbers were already placed there and all the survivors are doing is inserting the math symbols, the numbers being controllingly written don't mean anything. A production staff not under a time crunch could neatly chalk out the numbers that we see here. Same with the nice even dash marks. I still think the color variation on the chalkboard is the key to show what parts of the equation the survivors have to fill in and what is pre-filled in for them. And yeah, i still can't figure out the dashes at the bottom. I keep thinking maybe there's some encryption key at the top half of their chalkboards so the numbers correspond with letters or something, but that wouldn't work as the equation answer would be only one set of numbers. certainly not enough to spell out anything. *lets out primal Coach yell of frustration* |

Those dashes bother me too.
Maybe the ANSWER isn't the end of a calculation string. It could be that each operation along the way yields a number, which gets written on the corresponding dash, and those digits have operators, and there is a third set of digits, and they are the combination to a lock, which opens and releases a flag (or one of those nifty signs that a challenge is complete). A mistake in one answer would have a domino effect and it would be hard to know where you went wrong without rechecking all the numbers and operators. The math problem is not hard, so it seems like memory would have to be the key, and the memorization would be challenging because they have to hold onto it while they run the course and back. I see TDT's point that the spinning operators look to be near the tables, but how hard is that to accomplish? Why does JP say this is BRILLIANT? I know he's full of hype, but I don't see anything even BRIGHT about that, if the numbers are already written in and the operators are in sight of the tables. |
