I don't think any Anoop fan here is surprised that he's booted, just saddened over the possibilities and the loss of future performances. But like James said, there is also some relief that Anoop doesn't have to be browbeaten every week. This show doesn't know what to do with an Indian guy who breaks all stereotypes by being a technically accomplished singer of R&B tunes - the show and its audience are more comfortable with stereotypes like That Cute Guy, That Fat Girl That Becomes The Forerunner Fodder, The Black Diva, the Bizarre-looking Heartthrob, The Edgy Girl With The Pink Hair, etc. Give him someone like Anoop and they were like, "Uh? Wud? Fratboy! Boring! Dull! Boring! Wud? Wud?" So yeah, goodbye Anoop. The parting is sad, but not too unexpected. See you at the finale. <3

Before I had even heard Desai sing I knew I liked the guy. His meaningless banter with Simon over his major was quite funny, the fact alone that he studied barbecues was just incredible to me, and by throwing out the "Noop-Dogg" nickname, I knew that this guy had a life outside of this and wasn't going to be in the business of taking himself too seriously. On top of all that, his name is incredibly fun to say! "Thank You" by BIIM became a pretty popular choice in the audition rounds this year - Anoop nailed it the best out of anyone who attempted it. I personally became a fan of the guy's voice so quickly because of the 90's flavor he had in his tone. Desai was (and still is) true R&B, "old school" R&B if you will. In my opinion the music industry is in desperate need of that right now so Mr. Desai quickly became my top pick. He very quickly seemed to gain the net's support - I would probably go as far to say that he was the WWW favorite. And although I have not conducted any polls to truly get to the source of Desai's popularity, I would say in large part it is why most of us here have enjoyed his time on the show - he is real. I also get the impression that the ladies are quite fond of him. To the shock and surprise of a few, Desai was not shoved down our throats during Hollywood. Although, I would have liked to see him a little more then we did, I wasn't too worried. I knew he had one of the best voices in the competition and also knew that his fanbase was also growing signifigantly everyday. Him being the first person to make it through "The Chair" was encouraging to see and as we headed into the Top 36, he didn't feel pimped but also didn't feel ignored. I felt good about it. I still have no idea what the Judge's found wrong with "Angel of Mine". Was one of the two best pure performances of that night and vocally, it was spot on. Honestly, we should have all seen the writing on the wall about how everything with Desai would play out after this. The critiques Desai got were negative, but not really about anything. Simon asked Anoop why he sang it and treated the performance negatively but never really gave any reasons why. Theories on why this happened? Maybe the Judges wanted to go in another direction? Maybe they had already decided that Adam and Gokey were the two and they couldn't have three male favorites in a season where the men were going to clearly dominate? I'm not sure and I never will be. I guess it is entirely possible that they just didn't like the performance, but the fact that no real reasons were given is what throws me - oh well, I'll never know. Anoop was not voted into the Top 12. We now flash forward to the Wild Card round. Anoop's popularity on the net was still very much in place. Hell, Abdul made reference to it after the "Angel of Mine" performance. Even the most intense Anoop hater was admitting that he was a lock to get through. But then they waited... When Anoop was the last WC to be announced on the Wednesday show, I simply took it as the producers realizing that this guy had a strong following and they wanted to make sure that if he got through, all those fans would vote. But, when they went to the well again with the Top 13 moment, I am not so sure what they were going for. But before I get to that... "My Prerogative" by Desai still gets my vote as the best performance of AI Season 8 and is right up there for me with any other performance in AI history. So many factors went into it. He was singing for his life, performing towards the haters, and on top of that was paying tribute to his deceased friend. The fact that the WC landed on the anniversary of Eve's passing must have been incredibly hard for Anoop and with so much on his plate, he delievered an emotional and chest pounding performance. It is impossible for me to not get hype when he hits that long note near the end of the song. That was Anoop's AI "moment" and truly meant something not only to him, but to many others as well. Did the Top 13 reveal help him overall? Looking at it now, for as great of a moment as it was, I don't think so. First off, half the audience didn't even see it because of DV-R's cutting out and ultimatley, for as great of a moment as it was to watch, I really think it made Desai look like "second string" to the general voting audience - something he couldn't afford to have happen after "Angel of Mine". However, it is impossible to not enjoy Anoop's reaction to the annoucment and I am not sure if in this instance, the show was trying to screw him over. The WC round was centered around Anoop. They announced him last, had him perform last, and then announced him for the big stage last in a very dramatic fashion. At the time, I took it as the show giving him center stage and acknowelding his popularity. I still think that was probably their intetion, unfortunatley, it didn't translate that way to the general audience. But Anoop Desai had made the Top 12 13 and still had a dedicated fanbase behind him. He also had the media buzzing, a great voice, and what could be interpreted as momentum. As much as I thought Kris did a great job and Adam did his thing they did not perform 'disco.' I think taking liberties is good, but at the core if they do not have key elements of the genre (this week disco), they kinda miss the mark.

"Beat It" was not a fantastic performance, but it was certainly better then the Judges made it out to be. Desai was middle of the pack that first night, not bottom of the barrel. I truly feel that his chances of winning were gone after being in the Bottom 2 in Week 1. Simon's comments following the performance, the Top 13 "stigma" he now had on him, and the excessive amount of pimping going on for others were all major nails in the coffin. Desai didn't give up though and rebounded nicely. "Always on My Mind" was the right song choice for Week 2 and reminded those that his vocals were as pure and strong as anyone in the competition. On that same token, "Ooo Baby Baby" pleased the Judges and resignated with the audience. Anoop wanted to show his versatility however, and that ironically is where I believe the final coffin was nailed. "Caught Up" was a good vocal, a good performance, simply put, it was good overall. It was just the wrong choice. Get rid of the fact that the Judges hated it, this was Desai's chance to bust out something that he knew could advance him up in the eye's of America. For me, that would have been "I'll Make Love to You" by BIIM. All the performances that night were pretty horrible all around. Anoop could have easily leaped from the middle of the pack to one of the power players while staying "un-pimped". And again, I personally enjoyed "Caught Up" but I just think a huge opportunity was missed by not going a different direction. Desai survived and came back the next week with a brillant rendition of "True Colors". This is without question the most under-rated performance of the season. If Gokey did the same exact performance the Judges would be salivating for more and would be unable to speak. I am not saying that they didn't praise Anoop after "Colors" but it was even better then they gave it credit for. I will go as far to say that *Anoop's "True Colors" was and will be better then any of Gokey's performances all season - easily. Once Desai landed in the B2 again after "True Colors" I think we all pretty much saw the writing on the wall. I have said this before but I think Anoop cornered the "non-voting" portion of the AI audience. Up until this season, I never voted. I know very few who do. Anoop, as I have said is clearly very popular on the net, but we are really the minority of the voting audience. I always hear his name positively come up in AI discussion but I don't think those people are voting. Or, it could just be possible that he isn't as popular as I think he is, but I just think facts dispute that theory. "Everything I Do" was another great job by Desai. I however, think it was another missed opportunity. Something like "I Will Get There" by BIIM could have elevated him to that next level. With his back against the wall like it was at this point, he didn't have the luxury of simply showing people that he could kill ballads after already doing that. I think he needed something more. I have already harped on "I Will Get There" a lot so I won't do it here, but that again could have been another "moment". Granted, it is very easy to look at all of this now in hindsight. And again, "Everything I Do" was fantastic for my money. Heading back to the B3 and then the save being used was incredibly frustrating to watch and I assume even moreso for him - well actually, I'm sure he was happy to see the save used on Matt, but regardless. He needed to hit Disco Week out of the park, he didn't... I am clearly an Anoop fan but I won't lie and say that "Dim All the Lights" was exceptional when it wasn't. It was good, but not on the level of the last two performances. And honestly, you can't really fault the Judges here either. Only Simon disliked it and that fact was a little shocking even to me. The odds were just stacked up too high against him at this point. Yes, the save being used the week before and the constant pimpage (all of which I will touch on in a bit) majorily factored in, but Desai needed an 10 out of 10 and then some on Tuesday to conceivably give himself a chance at getting past Final 5. He went out with class and dignity and the satisfaction of knowing he wasn't really given the most fair of shakes... It is because of that I can personally 'dim the lights' on Anoop's Idol run without too much anger. But those facts are there. Also there are a long list of positives Anoop did while on the show. Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	I won't do another long catalog of Anoop's triumphs - I'm just pissed that he got f*cked by the judges. I didn't like him much at first, but got on his side when he got so unnecesarily blasted on top 13 night for a middle of the pack performance. It was downright viscous to pretend that HE was the "13th" person of the group: even if he was the last person they decided on, Megan and Jasmine deserved to be selected either FOR or FROM the Wildcard a lot less than he did. I said at the time that this type of treatment was unprecedented. Caaaarmen was treated as just another finalist in season 2, even though she hadn't been picked for the semis at all. Niko was a replacement finalist in season 4, but the judges never treated him as a pariah because of it. But the judges were totally against Anoop from the first moment he sang in the finals, and finally got their revenge by forcing mediocre Matt back on us (and getting away with it). Anoop wasn't going to get much further anyway, but he could have kicked ass next week with the swing theme and maybe made it to the top 4.

My favorite one is the third video when the other contestants talk about the person who leaves. It's always really complimentary but this one was cute - Allison is adorable. Also, more on Anoop from the EW on the scene report including this: I've never heard anyone thank the band and the crew while on their way out the door like Anoop took the time to do tonight, and I think that was by far his best performance on the show. His equally classy parents stood respectfully during the whole "journey" video, and when we finally dragged the short show's corpse over the finish line, Simon was the first on stage to shake Anoop's hand. And so does that kid's chapter end, not necessarily a moment too soon, but boy I wish we could have maybe lost a Gokey or two first. I mean, you want to talk about someone who was utterly themselves from the get-go this season -- I think you gotta look at Anoop as the prime example. Let me know if you guys want me to bring over more interviews if I find them.

It wasn't what it needed to be or what it could be. He did much better on the sing out. You could tell that he was finally relaxed up there. That said, I enjoyed every single moment I had with my Noop-Dawg and I will forever be trying to figure out what went so wrong with that whole talking back thing I don't understand. It must have been incredibly hard doing well in a competition you knew you could never win. I hope he does get to make a record cause I will be buying. I loved Caught Up! The song, the performance, the vocal and the studio recording. But his moment really was True Colors because it really came from the heart and those lyrics are just so perfect for him, all about him. I don't blame Matt for his departure. It helps that he and Matt seem to be good friends so... you know. I guess Anoop had to go eventually. The only thing that really sucks about his departure is that he has to share it with Lil. Ew.
