Sally Quinn was on The View today, not because of her owning and renovation of Grey Gardens (even though it was mentioned and pictures of its renovation were
shown), but because her son authored a book. It was a really sweet segment, and Sheri (Sherri?) even got choked up over what Sally's son wrote. Quinn
Bradlee is Sally's son with Ben Bradlee, and the book is A Different Life: Growing Up Learning Disabled and Other Adventures. If I could access
youtube at work, I'd try to imbed a clip of the interview here. Sally Quinn seems like a genuinely good person, and so I was pleased to learn that they
owned and had restored the home.

I saw it! I was only half-interested (OK, probably even less...like 1/8th interested) and must have been too lazy to reach for the remote to fast-forward like I usually would through a boring segment like that (or it was divine intervention that wanted me to see it!) and all of a sudden Barbara says that they live in the Grey Garden house and I'm like "WHAT THE FUCK???" It was so random! Turns out the mother is the Quinn woman whose essay I had just read the night before (linked here by Lolabingo). Freaky! |

Very freaky, Carboy! What was freakiest yet is that I almost watched the full hour of The View for the first time since Ro was on the show. Almost though.
Had Sally Quinn spoke about Grey Gardens in the segment after her son talked about his book as well as before Lily Allen I would have stuck around for the full
show.
Truth be told, I have only recently discovered the joy of Grey Gardens. Sure, I heard about the play on Broadway, and how it was about Big Edie and Little Edie. I have ordered the documentary on DVD though, and a friend has burned the HBO movie for me. Though I promise to have a head scarf on for both viewings. Sorry for being slow in discovering the beauty of this story. |

Okay, So I was scoping out the thread before I watched the film but didn't get a chance to watch the film until the night before last and didn't get a chance to post about it until now! I LOVED every minute of it. I remember watching the documentary before, I don't know where, if it was on hbo or some channel when I was younger, but I remembered it after seeing the commercials for this on HBO in the last few weeks here. It was SPOT ON, it couldn't have been any better, the acting was perfect. They both deserve Emmy and Golden Glob nods for this, it was truly epic in every way. I also DVR'ed it for my mom and I talked with her about it briefly, just asking if she watched it and liked it and she said it was good, she felt bad that Little Edie's mother was so controling and guilting of her, she even compared herself to that type of mom. <3 lol So this after noon, I was helping her clean out her closet and I was talking more about it and I pulled up the youtubes for her to see of Little Edie from the documentary and even the real life scenes from the doc that were in the film and she was in awe, and immediately addicted. I had her watching stuff for at least 2 hours. And so while we were putting the rest of her stuff on hangers she started singing 'tea for two' and we cracked up laughing. It was so sweet. Thanks everyone for posting all the info, links and videos. It is appreciated. |

I found a little mention in USA today.
Shades of grey. HBO's Grey Gardens averaged 1.8 million viewers Saturday, above average for the channel's original movies.I assume that does not include repeats and On Demand viewings. |

I'm watching the documentary now with the commentary on. It's fascinating.
I wish I had known these women. Would love to have spent some time with them on the balcony. Waiting till I have to have a bowel movement before I attack the books. Should be a couple of hours. |

omg, as I read this thread I was relieved to see others so deeply into this story/these people/the movie...
I knew pretty much nothing about Grey Gardens before watching the movie saturday night. I only knew about it because I had read an article during fashion week about the fashion in the movie. And I happened to be in a hotel sat night (don't have HBO back in my apartment), so put it on. I've been nuts about it since. Watched it two more times over the weekend and am nearly finished with the documentary as well (thanks to the person who posted the youtube links)...think I'm going to just have to buy the dvd. So unbelievably entertaining. All of it. Wish I had seen it on stage. I was cracking up during the whole documentary....Big Edie always screaming in the background no matter what Little Edie is doing. And watching the documentary it's amazing to see that nothing about the HBO film is exaggerated...they really are that eccentric. Drew was absolutely brilliant. |

It's frightening and comforting at the same time to realize I identify with these women so much. |
