What goes through your mind after finding out that your choreographer is Nacho Pop (other than, "gotta get my DFYL routine ready")? It's got to be one of the most deflating SYTYCD moments. And yet, even with the gratuitous and non-sensical Joker theme (why, pray tell, is he attacking a jogger?) Kat, Danny, and the Choreographer of Doom delivered my favorite hip hop routine of the season, with a couple of sick looking lifts and great synchro moments. Jason was right about some synchro problems, but I didn't think they were as pervasive as he made them out to be. I thought Kat & Danny delivered the best routines in weeks one and three, and the Mannequin dance from week 2 was better than I had remembered on rewatch. This week, they again had the best routine. Needless to say, Kat & Danny are my official favorite couple.

Amy is growing on me looks-wise. I am now starting to find her hot. But that outfit and routine were awful. More barely there outfits for Amy please.

Lamb and Timomatic suck. When Lamb's gnarly face isn't making me avert my eyes, watching them dance bores the piss out of me.

I never really liked Pania, and she was indeed terrible. To be fair, that was one of those routines with lots of posing and little dancing. It's hard enough buying Pania as a sexy temptress since she looks like a tranny, but she couldn't even fake at being sexy. Poor Ben was trying so, so hard.

Charlie and Penny were okay, but if you're going to do a Jason Gilkison routine, it better blow me out of the water. It was just "nice". Is it me or have they replaced the specific ballroom styles with a generic "Ballroom" so Gilkison can work with the power couples?

Speaking of which, I assume Loredo and Talia were doing a salsa -- I didn't quite catch the actual style. Talia was almost there with the hip swivel action (perhaps using Chelsie Hightower as the barometer is setting the bar too high), but she was a fearless partner -- those lifts were dangerously sick. Lordeo held up his end of the bargain, and perhaps it wasn't effortless, but it was very smooth. For all the tricks and lifts, I'd rank them second best.

BJ & Gianne started off well, but I got a bit bored by the end. Actually, I don't remember a lot about the performace.

By God, Mary was so bad I just skipped her "critiques". Just a whole lot of yelling and nonsense. There was this brief moment when Mary was calmly critiquing Loredo for being too high that made me wonder where Season 1 Meanie Mary went. Then she started whooping and hollering again when she got to Talia. My wife was on the computer and only heard the TV as I was watching, but she laughed every time I skipped through Mary's sections. She can't stand Mary's histrionics and schtick either.

The dancing this week made up for last week's medicore quality. The choreography was much, much better.

Laredo and Talia were the highlight of the evening with that Jazz piece. I thought Danny & Kat's contemp and Charlie & Penny's contemp were just a skosh under that (both were fantastic). Those three dances were brilliant. Talia is really cute when she's not scrunching up her face. When she's relaxed she looks like Kellie Martin. When she smiles too hard, she looks like a rodent.

I was disappointed in the judges reception of Dann & Kat's Paso Doble (with the exception of Bonnie, who loved it). That jaw dropping death spiral gave me chills -- I've never seen anything like that.

Degree of difficulty notwithstanding, Amy and Ben's mambo wasn't that great -- the shimmies in the middle barely registered and while I appreciated the technical complexity, it was not performed all that well. Their hip hop was almost the worst one of the season, saved only by Charlie & Penny's hip hop, which was the worst of the season.

BJ & Gianne do nothing for me. That Broadway routine was fun and cute, but not a hell of a lot of impressive dancing. The lift in the middle was ponderous. Either lifting is not BJ's forte or Gianne's thighs weigh more than they look. He's always struggling with her. I'm not sure why the judges overpraise BJ -- I would say he's the least talented partner dancer compared to the other 5 guys.

I am starting to be impressed with Timomatic, but Lamb was easily the worst dancer left. Her DFYL was more like a plea to leave. Terrible. I'm glad the judges finally cut her loose.

Danny's ouster was disappointing, but unfortunately, the judges seem to have a puzzling hard on for BJ, and Timomatic was the only "untrained" guy left. Danny's only shot was to get in the top three or get in a bottom three with Ben and Laredo. I was glad to see Kat was spared, but Danny was really the driving force in my favorite couple, so I feel sorry for him that he wasn't able to get his just desserts.

Yeah, it's hard envision a scenario where Charlie doesn't win. There is simply nobody who can go toe to toe with him popularity-wise, and no one at this stage can really outdance him. That contemporary routine with Talia was fantastic. That said, I am really digging Talia now, and she is my favorite female in the competition.

I still cannot understand the BJ love (that's what she said). I found his lifts clunky in the comtemporary, and I cannot shake the fact that he looks like Jemaine from FOTC. The dance was fantasic, yes -- but in my mind, it was the strength of the choreo that made it so good. I would have loved to have seen Ben and Amy dance that instead (it would have also been better if she ditched the boy shorts and wore a bikini bottom, but that's just me, heh heh). I thought Penny was Gemma 2.0, and while she appears to be much more popular (for one thing, she wasn't voted off this week), it's obvious that it was her partner that was generating most of the heat. Same with Kat -- without Danny, she's just meh.

Aside from the two contemporary routines, I was overall uninmpressed with the dances, and compared to last week, there was an overall dip in quality. Part of that were three really terrible routines -- the BJ/Amy hip hop was awful, Loredo and Gianne's hip hop was even worse, and the Kat/Tim "samba" was one of the worst things they've ever let on stage. Plus, Gianne and Loredo's table dance was ponderous and Penny/Ben's broadway routine didn't make any sense -- one minute he's dead and dancing like it's Weekend at Bernie's, and then he's doing pirouettes. Make up your mind, choreographer! I would have really enjoyed that if they could have had Ben dancing as a corpse for the entire second half instead of doing it intermittently from the start.

And props from me as well for Marko -- he's batting 1.000 in his choreo this season and I actually get almost as excited as the dancers when they step in the studio and see him. He looks like Val Kilmer's chubby little brother and I wasn't that impressed with his dancing last season, but his choreo is fantastic.
