Adams says he's still an effective mayor despite scandal

PORTLAND, Ore. -- One month after Sam Adams revealed that he'd lied about a 2005 sexual relationship with an 18-year-old, Portland's mayor still believes he can lead the city, even though the scandal could ultimately result in his recall from office.

The mayor said on Thursday he remains "hard at work" at City Hall and that the scandal is not a distraction.

"We're doing it (city business) every day ... whether it's cabinet meetings with 60 people attending or moving forward the city's first economic strategy in years," Adams said.

The president of the Metro council has come forward, questioning whether Adams can push key city projects.

Recently the Oregon Congressional delegation snubbed Adams by not inviting him to a federal stimulus meeting.

Adams said U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley were concerned "based on previous interaction with the television news media."

"They didn't want to be distracted again. The city of Portland moves on and we are well," the mayor said.


U.S. Rep. Kurt Schrader, D-Ore., would not comment on the controversy.

But Rep. Earl Blumenauer questioned whether the mayor could continue to lead the state's largest city and economic engine.

"Can he lead? I think that depends on whether another shoe is going to drop," said Blumenauer, D-Ore. "As long as he continues to do his job, and the city of Portland responds to us, we'll move forward."

The mayor said he could handle the criticism lobbed at him over his relationship with Breedlove.

"Critics showing up to city council meetings is not new or unique," he said.

But he reiterated his pledge to resign if the scandal consumed his administration.

"There are things that have affected city business, there's no question. But the work still needs to be done. There are issues that I care about," Adams said.

Adams also said that criticism "comes with the job" of serving as mayor.

"If it wasn't this issue it would be some other issue," he said.

Adams said he has no plans to resign or to become engaged to actress Tawny Kitaen.
