But they're not exactly cultural touchstones in the making, are they? It's not like in the 1980s or 1990s, when supermodels, American and otherwise, were at the top of the world and setting the trends for fashion and culture. Now, in the 2000s, I can count only one active supermodel who even comes close: Gisele Bundchen. What I meant to say in my last post was that America will never produce another world-class, legitimate, superstar top model, as long as people like Tyra Banks are dictating things. It's ironic that Tyra is doing this show to revive the American supermodel, and yet is reinforcing why the American supermodel died in the first place.

Very few people today still don't know who the holy trinity were, but that doesn't mean they weren't supermodels. The 90's supermodel was the height of exposure for models. They will never reclaim that glory because it was a fleeting moment in time. Tyra didn't do this show to revive the American supermodel. She did it to make money and continue building her brand. The American supermodel is doing just fine. This show is for entertainment puposes only. Tyra Banks has no influence whatsoever on the modeling or fashion industry. If you take this show so seriously you need to have your head examined.

The most successful working models are not automatically "supermodels". They need to cross over from the world of fashion to the larger cultural zeitgeist in order to achieve that benchmark. The models you are talking about haven't. Ergo, they are not supermodels. Alex is correct.
