14 - Chris Cornell (Soundgarden/Audioslave)

I only know of Chris Cornell thanks to David Cook and his cover of Cornell's cover.
Although I've heard of Audioslave before. |

Audioslave is pretty kick ass though sadly it seems like they'll never even come close to reach the same status as RATM or Soundgarden. Pretty sure they broke up a while back. At least, I know Cornell's out. To be honest, I never really got into Audioslave; I liked "Like a Stone" but most of their other stuff just seemed like music made for the sake of making music. They didn't really break much ground, whereas Soundgarden were at least somewhat innovative and probably the most diverse of the grunge institutions (don't really care for RATM at all so I can't comment on them). Chris has a new solo album coming out next month produced by Timbaland and the samples so far sound awful. Chris can sing just about anything but I'm not into the R&B style at all. Totally stumped by the 13 clue. There's a Smashing Pumpkins song called "Lucky 13" but that's too obscure to use as a hint. |

13 - Marilyn Manson
When he first started to gain huge popularity, I thought Manson was nothing more than a cheap gimmick singer, trying to get people's attention with shock value. But in time I grew to like him a lot and his music. There is definitely a real artist behind all that makeup. Wether you like or hate his music, you can't deny that he created a world of his own in the biz and has kept it going strong since. If he were indeed just a gimmick, he would've been long gone by now. This guy also gets a bad rap for promoting violence, which is beyond ironic because for one thing, he doesn't really but most rappers flat-out do and they never get the finger pointed at them like he does. People also constantly mistake him for a Satanist when he's merely an atheist who loves to antagonize Christians and other people who live by pre-fabricated rules that are totally unfounded. Last I checked being an Atheist means you don,t belive in Satan either. Though granted, some aren't that well known, he still has a good number of hits under his belt and "Sweet Dreams" is quite possibly one of the best covers ever. I've seen the guy in a couple of interviews and he's probably one of the smartest, deep-thinkers of our time, very articulate and believe it or not, somewhat charismatic. His schtick is bit far fetched but he makes it almost genuine and you can feel that part of him doesn't take himself too seriously either. Next: |

Anyone a fan of the runaways (the original rock goddesses)? |

Marilyn Manson! YES!
That picture creeps me the fuck out, but I don't disagree at all with his inclusion. Love his music. |

12 - Tori Amos
Wether it is because of constant drug abuse, schizophrenia or being posessed by some unknown entity, one thing is clear it's that this girl's crazy act isn't an act at all. But like an idiot savant, she has this wisdom and talent about her that is nothing short of mind blowing. Started off as your typical indie artist playing piano with somewhat strange lyrics, Tori evolved to an extremely versatile artist and her music became weirder and more creative by the minute. Her lyrics are so poeticly strange, I'm pretty sure half the time she doesn't even know what she's saying herself. Of course her die hard fans we'll pretend they know everything because they're convince they live in her head. For some strange reason, she loves to refer to herself in the 3rd person in her songs even though we clearly know she's talking about herself. I guess she has been through her rough patches (rape, miscarriage) and I can't help but wonder if that's what drove her cookoo. BTW, it's the good kind of cookoo. If she was a well-adjusted human being she'd probably be just another Sarah McLachlan or Jewel, but her excentricity and angelic voice is what has been pulling her apart every other female solo artist since her. 11 - Tom Morello (Rage against the Machine/ Audioslave)
Arguably one of the best guitarists of our times. He ditch the classic 80's metal guitar style and revolutionatinzed it with his own style. The only problem with Tom is that I unfortunately couldn't listen really much to him because he was a part of RATM and the singer's voice just cuts right through me. Such a shame. Though I've never denied the impact that RATM had on modern rock. I totally "got" the band, but again, just couldn't listen to them because of Zach de la Rocha. At least my wishes came true in the new decade where Tom teamed up with Chris Cornell for Audioslave. But for some reason, he's just not the same anymore, not as kick-ass like in RATM. It's like you can't have your cake and eat it too. |

#10 Kurt Cobain. Dur.
Marilyn Manson is I guess the Dave Matthews equivalent to me. I really don't like his music at all but in interviews (specifically the one in Bowling for Columbine) he's obviously incredibly intelligent and has a lot of common sense. I think what surprised me the most was how tactful he is in response to all the idiots who say that his music is responsible for making people violent; you'd think that he'd try and maintain his image and just tell them to fuck off, but he handles it perfectly. |

Yay for Dolores on the list! You should check out her latest album, "Are You Listening?", launched in 2007. There are some pretty cool songs on the
record.
Sheryl Crow FTW! |

10 - Kurt Cobain/Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters)
![]()
What would a list that shamelessly biased in favor of the 90's be without the appearance of Nirvana? Truth be told, I do think that Kurt has been ridiculously overrated since his death and his status of rock legend is totally questionable IMO. That being said, I can't ignore the fact that he is single-handidly responsable for getting me hooked on music. Before Nirvana came along, I was into C&C music factory, Technotronic and......well other stuff like that. When Nevermind was realeased I asked my mom to buy it for me, which she was horrified being that I was 9 years old at the time and that's when I started listening alterne and metal to this very day. Though unlike Kurt fanatics, I moved on after Nevermind and I never really cared for the unplugged stuff. Now Dave on the other hand has moved on to better things. As the leader of the Foo Fighters, he has shown to be really layed back with a huge sense of humor, which is refreshing since we assumed anyone from Nirvana was a depressive heroine junky. He succesfully severed ties with that band and it's style while still keeping fond memories of it. I always found the Foo Fighters' music to be a bit "meh" honestly, but I always loved Dave's energy. Saw him live once and it was much better than other bands I really liked that just didn't deliver. A side anecdote: I once told Dave to fuck off during a Smashing Pumpkins show because he kept passing in front of me and stepping on my feet. He apologized, walked off and that's when some dude asked me why I just told Dave Grohl off. Next: |

You'd better not disappoint with the Shirley Manson pic.
I don't know, I really can't see Kurt and Dave getting a joint entry just because they were both in Nirvana. One's a guy who masterminded a fantastic album and an above average one before offing himself and ensuring rock immortality, and the other is the frontman for arguably the most consistent mainstream rock band since the Beatles. And yet Wyl told him to fuck off. |

I don't particularly understand why Kurt is treated like such a god by all the Nirvana cult freaks either. I mean, you look at any Youtube video of
somebody or some band doing a Nirvana cover and they'll be ripped on like no tomorrow because they aren't Kurt. No shit morons, nobody is like Kurt,
nobody can "sing" like Kurt, but that doesn't mean his songs sound terrible coming out of somebody else's mouth.
Anyway, Nirvana = awesome. Foo Fighters = awesome. Keep it coming. |
