oh, and expect higher gas prices for a while, 75% of the GOM is shut in as well as most of the refineries along the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts

CBR, do you think that this could cause enough disruption that some places actually run out of gas for a few days? I don't know how the refining system
works, sorry for the dumb question.

did y'all have a problem after Katrina? If so, then yes. There are refineries on the east coast, so you might not have a problem, so it'll be mostly
the midwest and the south that's affected. Most of the east coast refineries get their oil from foreign companies.
also, it's gonna depend on how much damage there is to the rigs and refineries. Shell's Mars platform out in the gulf took almost a year to get back on production and it's one of the biggest producers out there. |

One of the talking heads on CNN or Fox or MSNBC said yeasterday that gas could jump as high as $5.00 USD per gallon for a few weeks.
otoh, the gubment has aslo said that gouging will NOT be tolerated. I just saw Ray Nagel on the 11:00 update from NO and he spent half of the time talking about looters. Apparently, there will be no mercy - the looters are going to be sent to the Federal max security prison up the road and put into Generel Population. Police force and National Guard has been doubled from the post-Katrina levels. Poor Lootie. |

But, who's going to be there to catch the looters? Mayor "You'd Better Be Scared" has already said they're only keeping a skeleton force
on duty.

I heard him say that the Police Force and National Guard were doubled. So, probably them.

The Mayor of NO saying that "Gustav is the mother of all storms" makes me laugh. (OK, I'm easily amused.)

I just saw the worst weatherman ever on The Weather Channel.. there was like a 30 second pause between everything he said... he kept forgetting the names of
the storms and he didn't know his geography and he would describe the position of the storm as... "over here" or "right there"
I hope he gets fired! |

Give the guy a break.
While there "appears" to be a map behind him, it is really nothing but a blank wall. The map is superimposed by the camera. He can't see what you see. |

I really hope that this is the storm where we get to see some reporter get speared by a flying street sign.

Forget oil, this thing is going to hit Avery Island. Think about what that's going to do to Tabasco prices.

I thought about New Iberia and my hot sauce too, Merk. Has it really been 3 years since lootie? And no hate thread for NO in 2008?
