Um, are you talking about Nastia Liukin and her coach Valery? He's her fucking DAD! Gross!!! I don't think that throughout the entire games, Shawn Johnson EVER received as high a score as she deserved. I feel like she was underscored each and every time, particularly on beam where she has been nearly flawless all three times. Nastia was great enough last night that she deserved the win, but it should have been much, much closer.

More then Liukin. |

Luikin has the artistry that European judges favor. Johnson has the powerful athleticism that is not the cup of tea of all judges. I think Gold and Silver is
pretty fantastic, I don't know how much closer you can get.
I wonder how many of the judges slept with her dad, back in the day, though. http://www.gymnpics.com/gymnasticgreats/mag/liukin.htm (He's from Khazakstan!) |

Try less than six tenths. I'd say that Shawn's bar routine and her beam routine each deserved 2-3 tenths higher than they scored. Both Shawn's AND Nastia's vault routine deserved 1-2 tenths higher. If all of that had happened, they would have only been a tenth or two apart... |

I think that when they gave Yang an overly generous score in her balance beam routine, they were forced to give Liukin a score that was higher than it would
have been if Yang was scored properly. Couple that with an undeservedly low score for Shawn on the balance beam, and the .6 gap should have been more like a
.2 gap going into the floor exercise.
I do remember the commentator saying that Johnson went 30 degrees past vertical on one of the handstands on the high bar, and that was a .5 deduction. I do appreciate Liukin's grace to Johnson's power, but on a strictly judgement basis, it's all about deductions for lack of execution. There's no real room for artistry the way it's scored right now.

I heard that differently. I thought he said that she wasn't quite vertical, and that IF a handstand was more than 30 degrees off vertical, it was a .5 deduction. I thought he was talking about a hypothetical, but not specifically saying that Shawn had earned the .5 deduction. It's not unlike when a gymnast puts one foot out of bounds, the commentator often says that if both feet went out of bounds, that is an automatic three tenths deduction -- the fact that the commentator says it in that way does not mean that they gymnast did it. |

Drew, sketchy scoring aside - it still had the same outcome. #1 and #2. There is no #2 plus.
And I think the judging was heavily biased towards the Chinese all along, so this is really great day for American gymnastics. I was worried with the team comp because it seemed like the judges were way more forgiving for the chinese errors. I love Bela's commentary and how he rountinely says that the Chinese team is underage. I look forward to seeing him and Bob Costas every night while this is going on. |

Agreed. I'm more upset about the preliminary scoring. If Shawn had gotten the scores she deserved, she may be competing in more event finals (beam, for example)... |

I was talking about Kesenia Semenova, who just after her uneven bars rotation, shared more than a peck on the cheek with a young coach who bears a striking resemblance to Amy Smart. Dammit, can't us hets ever get some points on the board? It makes me feel like a Canadian. Can somebody youtube it please?
Meanwhile speaking of videos, two that you must watch: - This from NBC, video of the 4x100m relay (the Lezak race) filmed with the underwater cameras with the above water commentary on the audio. This is easily the coolest thing I've seen during this entire Olympiad: http://www.nbcolympics.com/video/share.html?videoid=0812_HD_MUL_AU_CE493 (I couldn't figure out how to embed it, but it's worth cutting & pasting into your URL line.)
- Meet Anna Kotchneva. Does she remind you of Nastia last night? She should -- she's her mom; this is from 1987. Eerie -- they could be twins. |

He said that the judges could and probably did deduct .5 for being past vertical. Judging by the score, they must have. |

There are other hets on the board? I believe you were referring to this:
Amy Smart. Woot. |

So glad Nastia got gold and Shawn got silver. Even crooked scoring couldn't stop them, though like everyone else I think Shawn was underscored on several
events, noticeably UB and BB.
Does anyone else think she is the human incarnation of Gadget from the Rescue Rangers?
And don't know if this was posted yet, but it's funny:
