Your muscles grow or they don't. There's no such thing as "Oh, I do high reps with low weights, because I just want to get 'toned'".

"Toned" is just another way of saying you want definition without a lot of size. It is possible depending on your genetics, and your reps, sets,
intensity, and frequency. All muscles grow when they are trained but it does depend on how much, beefcake.
If you want toned, do the suggestions I listed instead of weight training. Or just do them period because weight training is the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the body's true strength. Weight training is mostly superficial. |

I know the myths; I'm saying they're not true. You're muscles won't 'grow less' by using high reps.
Things like pilates are fine, but they are not going to change your physique, any more than doing push-ups is going to build up your chest. |

So all the meatheads who do very heavy weights for 3 reps are idiots, then?

does anyone actually do 3 reps to gain muscle? I thought it was just to show off, like when you do a one-rep max

pffft, just run 10 yards from away from a weightlifter, they won't have the stamina to follow you.

Jesus lifted weights every day. But the only good it did him was being able to carry his own cross to his death.
So I say NO to wieght lifting. |

Free weight is only good if you are not stress out. If you are too busy, take classes instead. |

Has anybody mentioned the gym screamers yet? You know, the ones who yell "AAAAARGH" every time they lift, usually followed by them checking out
their gun profile in the gym mirrors?
I hate them SO MUCH

Yes Jeff, weight lifting is good for you if you follow proper form as MoBlo said (for your joints). Weight bearing exercises (like weight lifting, yoga,
pilates) strengthen the musculoskeletal system since stronger muscles necessitate the need for stronger bones. This is why when women have osteoporosis, they
recommend they do weight bearing exercises as it spares calcium.

I don't understand where this assumption comes from that anyone who picks up a barbell suddenly gains 30 pounds of muscle. I'm a bit of a gym rat, and
in pretty much every gym I've ever visited, I see very few people with well-developed physiques. Limit it to men over 30 (which is what I'm assuming
the OP is) and I can count them on one hand. It takes years of consistent training for most people to add a few pounds of muscle.
